Hopefully they can help you out, the biopsy procedure itself is cheap, but the testing is the $$$ part.

??? how do you figure this out??? General anaesthesia, surgery time, intravenous fluids, pain relief, antibiotics, suture material, hospital fees... There's no way that will be less than $200.

It makes perfect sense, have you seen how much vets charge?

The biopsy has already been done. It was performed when they did the procedure on the cat. The didn't do the procedure just for the biopsy, so adding the cost of equipment to get the samples and the 5 mins to do a biopsy whilst the cat was already under a GA means that in the OPs situation the biopsy was cheap.

If they did the biopsy the next day under another GA etc, then yes I would agree with you and it would be over $200.

what an odd comment. its an insurance against high costs. thats not really a bad idea considering what pets cost to treat.

Yeah I don't really see why it's so odd? What about when you have a horse? It can cost $10k + to have colic surgery. Most people wouldn't have that lying around and that would be more than many average peoples car's are worth!

Are you an idiot? Did you even bother to read some of the responses, including my own, citing the value of it?

Unless of course, you are someone who has pets but wouldn't spend a cent to save them.

I think a lot of people don't realise the cost of vets bills until they need one.

Just an update on the biopsies, the vet school has decided to do them for free for me So hopefully they'll be done in a day or so!

I'd rather pay $30 a month and have the option to have surgery done on my dog or horse than not be able to afford it if something happens.

Surgery on my dog was $4000 for a broken leg (had to be pinned). I didn't have insurance then, but I do now!

The horses have public liability insurance too, in case one gets out and gets hit by a car (yes, the owner is liable for car repairs!).

Pet insurance is 110% worth it.

I'm with RSPCA (RSPCA PetCare Plus).

Think about it this way - you as a person has medicare to fall back on (even if you don't have private insurance), your pet doesn't.

My dog had a absess growing on her foot, we initially thought it was a grass seed or something - but it ended up being surgically removed. All said and done, we were out around $1.2k - well would have been. I got a nice cheque for $900 odd on the mail after lodging the claim.

Pet Insurance has easily already paid for itself (the dog is less than a year old) - and as far as choosing a vendor, the logic behind us with RSPCA was as follows...

1. Its the RSPCA, whilst I'm sure some greedy insurance company is underwriting it, I like to think that the RSPCA is at least gaining some profit out of it - which is a good thing.
2. They don't have breed exclusions (check other vendors, most of them have it). They cover everything except pre-existing conditions. Hence you get your pet covered as early as possible, then it doesn't matter if they have a typical breed problem - its covered.

15 minutes surgery time alone was $500. And another $150 for gribbles pathology to test what they cut out of her.

I have a Cavalier that seems to have a Joint/Nerve/Muscle problem in his back leg. Is that considered a pre-existing ailment as it hasn't been fully diagnosed as to what the problem is?

Ive been reading up and it appears that ANYTHING to do with his back legs/hips/ nerve down there will not be covered as it could be related to this existing ailment! If thats the case then Pet Insurance sucks as my dog is only 2 years old and I've only just got enough income to afford it for him and Health Cover for myself (just moved out of home)
