its a sweet game! i think its going to take alot of profit away from diablo 3.

Sooo many ppl talking in game that they are gunna keep playing PoE instead of buying d3. By the sounds of it, the only thing d3 has over poe is the graphics. Dont get me wrong, i love d2 and cant wait for d3.... but this is crazy good value for $10 pre purchase (access to beta) compared to $100 for d3

Just bought my closed beta key, can't wait to try it out with a couple of mates tonight.

Does anyone know if the client is on the Internode fileserver? Can't check it at work.

New beta patch coming out on 8 May - apparently quite big improvements and changes to the game. Monster AI has been mentioned specifically.

I've been playing so far for about 6 days and have levelled up 3 different classes to a mid range character level.

These are my initial impressions from the beta:

General
Very similar to Diablo 2, in fact if I had to sum this game up in a sentence I would say it is Diablo 2.5.

It is amazing what has been achieved from this small studio.

Graphics
Pleasing and well delivered. Very much suit the theme of the game. There are enough different areas and eye candy to keep you happy instead of just one dreary monotony.

The animations are smooth and do justice to the gameplay, i would make that comment alongside other players that the spiders in game are freaky, even after death.

Sound
Sound effects are spot on, do the job and enough diversity between enemy types to be useful.

Leaves a little to be desired in the music department. Not due to the current music that fits well but there is not enough diversity. The existing music is engaging, ambient and ethereal for the most part and upbeat when required it does suit the mood well. I think the lack of diversity is due to its stage in development and my understanding is that the proper launch soundtrack is being made now ready for launch.

Gameplay

Itemisation is pretty much spot on. There is a massive diversity of items that is pretty similar to diablo 2. The major change is with sockets in place in virtually every item that allows the use of active skills.

The in-game currency consisting of orbs used to modify/upgrade/change items also ties directly into the diversity of items.

The active skills being tied to gems that you then place into items and level up whilst on your gear makes for a very replayable and ever expanding experience. I haven't found all the skill gems yet and some are restricted by level. Many are given as quest rewards and you can get them as infrequent drops from monsters. This allows for many different types of play such as: -levelling up skill gems for one character with another higher level character
-making sure you dont level them up too quickly if u cant keep up with the mana cost
-the ability to swap/change/try different skills on the fly
-play like pokemon and try to collect them all

The second aspect central to the gameplay is the passive skill system that is a very interesting way to approach the customisation of a character. It is the only choice when you level up and combines a choice of attributes and 'skills' on the same passive skill tree (see here http://www.pathofexile.com/passive-skill-tree/)

As you can see it is basically limitless in which direction you can go with whatever class you want. There are limited respec orbs available, as quest rewards, as an infrequent drop or through trading.

The way both the active and passive skills are handled is in my opinion the best way to allow a lot of customisation whilst still allowing for meaningful choices on your character. It also gives the incentive to restart and level up again with the same class to try a different passive skill tree, a different build or playstyle. The great thing is you dont then have to start from scratch but have access to the active skills that you have acquired. But some may have been levelled up too much and you wont have met the level requirements.

Thanks for the detailed review.

I've been playing for a couple of months and the game is fantastic. In my view, far more fun and with a great, great deal more longevity than D3.

Far more interesting customisation and gear setups. Great community. Great developers. Lots of end game interest. Not dumbed down, but not overly complicated.

Most importantly for me, THERE IS NO PAY TO WIN. NO REAL MONEY AUCTION HOUSE.

By the way, I think this should be moved to the general PC Games thread - it's no difference than D3 in terms of stlye of game. I think the game gets less exposure stuck in the MMORPG section.

I am hugely confident that any fans of D2 will enjoy this game tremendously, moreso than D2's erstwhile successor.

(continued)
The difficulty isnt forgiving and I think this is great! This is mostly limited to your items and not your build at the early stages of the game, so that next item will help you kick monsters butt. Towards the mid game though you will need to have specialised your active skills towards something, or have done the same with your passive build otherwise you will find that the ability to kill monsters the same level starts to grind to a halt. You can always get carried by a party if necessary whilst you work towards something though, or until you find that awesome bow/sword/whatever.

I think this is the two things that made diablo 2 so great, always chasing that next great item and always chasing that next great build, and they have captured it perfectly in this game. The way that items and skills have been implemented has certainly had me coming back for more, and even with limited playtime I feel that this has the same sort of gamblers addiction that diablo 2 had that kept me coming back for more like a crack whore to blowjobs for her next fix.

The quests are very similar to a lot of others in the genre, there isnt really much innovation here or anything that is out of the ordinary. Mostly go to A, collect B, return to C or 'kill this' quests. There is also a limited amount of content, this is due to the limitations of the beta with lots more to follow upon release.

I havent touched too much on the storyline because to be honest I have been too busy trying to play the game instead of following it closely. I think the storyline is also in further development and will be improved upon release.

Partying is easy, you can name and create a party in 2 seconds. This has been great even during the short period of time I have been playing in public parties.

The community is great and the playerbase is helpful and supportive. I highly recommend further reading on the official forums.

A lot of the current complaints I have about the game are missing features that are in development and to be implemented soon. Namely a lack of chat channels, easier trading between characters, more info on game mechanics and the lack of an oceanic server.

Summary
If you really enjoyed D2/LoD and were towards the more 'hardcore' of the playerbase then this is a game I would recommend to you. I think it would be better to wait until release, or play the beta sparingly so you dont get frustrated over the lack of content and some of the missing gameplay elements.

This game with a bit of polish will certainly be taking up a lot of my time as i try to find or craft that next great item or make another character for a specialised build.

Come on mate - it's $10 for a beta key and I would be amazed if you didn't get value for money many times over.

Let me know if you need a hand in-game, I'd be happy to help out. I'm generally on during Australia east coast mornings given I'm on the other side of the world.

Awesome news - new end game for PoE! Talk about innovation and longevity. These guys are just brilliant old school game designers.
