You can't simply "uninstall device" and rely on windows to DELETE the driver when it says "uninstalling this driver will cause the device to cease functioning"

You need to get driver cleaner, or delete the driver MANUALLY.

Also, check your bios.

Is it possible to move the PC or switch so that you can try it out with one of the 5m cables that works on the other PC's? Then you can see whether it is your 30m cable that is the issue or not.

well not really...
ive got the comp in another room and its all setup and all cable management has been done. its not the easiest of tasks to complete unfortunately

i was thinking more along the lines of 'is that 30m cable to large to transfer gigabit speeds?'
could that be a reason as to why its only showing up as 100mbps?

only if the cable is "faulty" ie miss wired or not all 8 pins are connected.... the only way to check would be a cable tester..... not in adelaide are you ??

Cat 6 is good for 90m line length factoring a 5m patch lead either end

Only if its crap cable or crap crimps. Cat6 is rated to gigabit speed to 100 meters.

Conversely, an unmanaged switch is basically a black box...you plug network cables in, lights come on, it works...there is nothing more you can do with it. As you would expect, managed switches are more expensive but depending on your environment, not always necessary.
Highly recommend the HP Procurve 1810G-8

All you need to do is unplug all the cables going into the switch (and leave them there), take the switch for a walk into your PC room, plug it into the power, and plug one of the short cables from the switch into your PC (and see if it connects at 1Gb speeds). You don't need to move any other cables around. Try this, it will save you lots of other stuffing around, will only take 10mins at most and won't stuff up your cable management.
