Also got Audioengine's D1 Premium 24-Bit DAC, which goes well with the speakers.

Not saying the A5 sounds bad, but it doesnt feel like such a good deal anymore (compared to the original 350 price) Although, it still depends on your room, if youve got a square room and placing the speakers on a table up against a wall, go with the A5

im thinking about buying some akimate micros to replace some creative 2.1's for my PC. Usage would be 30/70 split between music and games. They're a bit more then I want to spend but they're supposed to be good. Anyone have some advise?
also, Im using onboard sound card. Any point in upgrading that?

Hey Guys,
I'm looking at getting a 2.1 system but a budget one. What is best bang for buck under $70 odd dollars? Prefer bass control with it

I doubt you're gonna get anything decent for $70. Just get a Logitech/Edifier/Creative set from a JB HiFi/Hardly Normal/EB Games...

G'day guys,
Always used onboard laptop speakers (yes I know...), or headphones due to constantly being on the move with work. About 6 months ago picked up a set of Logitech LS21's for dirt cheap. Been using them since as a stop gap whilst home. I'm now more stable with work, so looking at moving up in the world of desk audio. Now I'm a complete noob when it comes to understanding how all this audio stuff works. My basic understanding is the laptop audio is crap. My question, I want to buy a set of Microlab Solo6C speakers. I have a Clevo P150HMA (ATI 6990M) laptop. What do I need to buy to get these speakers working. If I plug them directly into my laptop, will they work, sound like crap? Do I need to buy an external Amp? A DAC? I'm after the most cost effective solution to getting these speakers work well with my laptop. The laptop has Realtek HD Audio manager software, if thats going to make a difference? Cheers Last edited by Frenchpom; 9th March 2013 at 8:12 PM. |

I'd just try the speakers with the onboard sound of the laptop, if you like them then just use that.
If you don't like the way it sounds, you can try a USB sound card. But yes, they should just plug and go.

Thanks for the reply Rat. My understanding was the sound cards in laptops usually sound like crap and offer up too much "noise" when being used directly. But it's a good suggestion to just plug the Microlab speakers in and see how they go. Seeing as how I'm not really used to decent sounding PC speakers, I'm sure I'd be happy.
If I did say want to get better sound, for a laptop, what route would be best to go? Would I need one of these little DAC boxes I've been seeing a lot of people have plugged in to their computers, with the speakers in turn plugged into the DAC? |

What are the best places to buy drivers? I'm looking for some 4" and tweeters to go in an enclosure I have. The enclosures are only small (0.129ft^3), and they'll be computer speakers after I build an amp.
The Australian equivalent of Parts-express?

Hi all,
Looking for a set of 2.1'/2.0's around the $150 mark. System needs to have front mounted or wired remote volume/power and headphones. Used for a combination of music, movies and gaming. Let me know if you have any recomendations - currently looking at the logitech z623 or creative t40 SII. Thankyou Paul Last edited by barbz; 10th April 2013 at 2:00 PM. |

Well it seems my trusty Logitech X-230 speakers are finally dying after 10 years of solid service, including the famous "uni years" with multiple parties.
The subwoofer "level" knob is getting loose and constantly turning itself to max and the sub driver itself has started rattling a bit. Budget is pretty slim - I'd love some Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 but they seem to be completely unavailable here in Oz, even though they are still sold in the States. So, keeping the budget under $100, do people think the Microlab FC530U are a decent speaker for the price? Wood cabinets, midrange + actual tweeter, 6.5" sub driver. Other contenders are the Swan M10 or Edifier S330D - though both are at least $50 out of my intended budget. Neither hold a candle to the ProMedias, but at least they are readily available.

i got the M10s, can't recommend them highly enough at their pricepoint. sound is warm and full to my non-audiophile ears.
as reviews have said, not quite as bassy as some logitech bass-heavy sets, but then that's to my liking.

But I'd spend the extra $$ on getting the Swan M10's or the Edifiers. Now I'm also looking for suggestions as to which sub I should get for my Swan M200MKIII's.. So far I've looked at the Wharfedale SW150, Audioengine S8 and the KRK KRK10S. The sub would need RCA inputs and RCA output to my speakers as the speakers dont have any outputs |
