I entered an American Pale Ale and a Northern British Brown Ale. Like I said, I'm not expecting them to do particularly well but I'm totally willing to pay $5 per beer for some proper BJCP feedback.

90/150 which makes... 30. Yes. I got right on the threshold of a bronze. But I'll still take that as a win.

I think that one was only my 3rd or so all grain batch. So I'm chuffed.

Yeah nothing to be upset about there at all! Now the trick is to re-brew based on the feedback and beat the previous score

Comps are strange! One beer I entered in to a comp, a Robust Porter, I was expecting it to do reasonably well, my friends and I thought it was a good drop. All 3 BJCP judges commented that it was infected and it didnt score well at all!

Another beer, an IPA in the same comp, I wasnt really happy with but decided to enter it for feedback anyway, it scored really high, all the judges loved it!

Go figure! I guess thats why I'm not a beer judge!

All it takes is one bad bottle, the bottle that went to comp may well have picked up a beer spoiler at bottling, and the rest of the batch was clean as a whistle. Just because they picked up an off flavour in that bottle doesn't mean the whole batch was bad.

They can only judge what they're presented with

Just because it wasn't to your taste, doesn't mean it wasn't to style

They were correct with the Porter - it just wasnt a taint I picked up or identified, until they pointed it out. Unfortunately from then on whenever I poured one I could taste it!

The IPA was technically a good beer, just not the hop/malt character I was orginally after. Having no expectations of a beer helps in being an impartial judge!

Will be spending some more time in the garage with steel and the welder, hoping to have my brew frame tacked up by the end of the day.
