You can "pledge", which is essentially pre-ordering.

Nothing wrong with the idea of baiting investors. If there is enough initial interest, the investors are almost certain and he could end up with some serious funding. He certainly has the background to provide a good product.

Looks very awesome. My game collection has been lacking a good space combat sim... Now I will just have to buy a joystick just before it comes out.

In fact, tempted to fire up Starlancer/X-Wing/Tie Fighter now..

I'm really doubting they would be able to finish the game with only 2 mil, looks like a lot of detail is going into the game which means making assets for it would take a huge amount of time.

well the game is already partially done (a ~year or so in?), which is how they are able to show the current build.
id dare say roberts and co have invested a bit of their own money into the project thus far, and need another ~2million to finish it off

Based on the livestream and leadup stuff, I thought he already had funding from private investors. It was just that some of it was contingent on demonstrating sufficient interest via this pre-order and 'kickstarter' stuff.

I figure its best to treat any kickstarter style campaign, especially ones with a delivery date several years out, as a massive gamble though.

During production it’s likely that many of these features will be dropped, or pushed way back into an expansion or update. This is a single-player game mixed with an MMO mixed with a player-driven economy, all wrapped around space ships with complex physics and amazing graphics that will be sold as product and then given free-to-play-style mechanics. It could be the most complex project possible in gaming, and Roberts only has experience with a few aspects of the design. This is a risky, expensive, and deliriously optimistic project.
dont get your hopes up too high guys, this bit is correct

Edit

Quote:
Galatica-like star carrier. He tells me that there are 7 million polygons in the ship. Roberts walks a character (there are 100,000 polygons in this single character he says.) around inside the ship, showing off the graphics and the level of detail he's built into the game.
cough cough bullshit cough

Most of whats proposed was done pretty well in Freelancer. I'd think between then and now technology could fill in a few of its shortcomings

sure, it can be done, just not in a timely nor budgetary fashion

Freelancer is by comparison a million times less complex graphically and engine wise, the engine they were at the time was from another spacesim, so they had a fair bit of a headstart. assets / iteration etc were all cheaper to do. you could make 10 ships back then for the price of 1 today.

it'll be interesting to see where they get. ie, cryengine is almost a million on its own, so 10 - 14mil for the size/scope they want will be pushing it

Freelancer was very much a arcade space game, this is trying to be a true simulator. Just check out the section where he demonstrates Newtonian physics with thrusters on ships etc...
