I'm going to be in Tokyo for a few days early Feb (probably 1st to 5th) and trying to decide where to stay in Tokyo. I've stayed in Shinjuku previously and found it really easy to get around from there.

We are just going to be bumming around, shopping, enjoying Tokyo basically. Thoughts?

EDIT: I'm fairly certain it was just a Best Western in Shinjuku, which was reasonable enough.

I stayed near Uguisudani and Ueno stations back in May. Both had access to the green and blue subway lines and made getting around super easy (for a first timer).

Uguisudani was at a hostel, and Ueno a hotel, which I picked for the proximity to the Narita express line... which wasn't helpful as I got lost trying to find the actual station for Narita in the rain. Fun times.

My next trip I don't think I'll care where I stay, as long as it's near a subway.

In Nagoya, the hotel I stayed at had basement access to an underground mall, that went into the station... was the greatest thing ever on the days it rained.

Help!

Do you think Fukuoka & Hiroshima are worth a visit?

I'll be in Japan over Xmas/New Years for 4 weeks. I'll have to be in Tokyo for 1 week, then Osaka for 2 weeks - plan on doing kyoto/nara while based in Osaka. Trying to figure out what i should do for the last week... at the moment im considering doing Fukuoka & Hiroshima....

OR jumping across to Shanghai for a week

What would you do ocau?

Fukuoka itself is a bit boring and there are other parts of Kyushu that would be more interesting IMHO:

Hiroshima does have more to see (though it can be a bit depressing) but a excellent side trip from there is Miyajima (take a ferry):

I wouldn't dismiss it completely if you're passing through, Fukuoka is famous with the Japanese for food. Evening street ramen is a must, pubs are the best I've seen in JP. In the burbs they have a chain of $1 sushi restaurants/trains that is also up there. The local clay statues 'Hakata dolls' are good gifts for back home.

I'm leaning towards Shanghai at the moment, i think the peace park and miyajima are about the only things i would like to see...not sure its worth a week. Seems like i can do a lot more in Shanghai.

Heading to Japan in October with my family. I've seen mention in a few places that visible tattoos can be a problem in Japan, is this still the case? I can cover mine up reasonably easily if need be but I'd rather be prepared.

mostly onsens really. but there are some that will allow tattoos like dogo onsen. I haven't had any issues myself as I have tatts on my arms.

Hiroshima is easily done as a daytrip from osaka, for me it was sureal standing at the observatory id seen in so many photos and war docos. The park and museum are very good.

As stated you won't get into Onsens (hot spring bath-houses), in some of the older traditional areas you may feel a sense of judgement as well and possible discrimination.

Tattoos have been a symbol of criminals and gangs for a very long time (especially the Yakuza) and you may get lumped in with them.
