Default Blades By Baz

On suggestion from the, "Show me your knife" thread, I thought it might be fun for all to start a build thread on knives.

Here we go. What a wonderful way to express beauty, sculpt and improvisation in an artform that has practical uses once complete!

I Found a few scraps and ideas started flying. For my first attempt, I found an old mower blade, (very hard steel), a copper gas pipe, a brass welding rod, brass bolt and some Eucalyptus deadwood.

I Finished off the knife and hopefully did it justice with the 650D and 18-55kit outside in the twilight.

Going to start another one soon. I think I need practice. Already I see ways I could have done it better.

I've started on the next one. This one will be for my wife. Each one getting better I guess.

Another mower blade, some more eucalyptus deadwood and a very expensive, but very old chunk of beating brass that I've had for a while, waiting for a good use.

1 & 2. Continuing on with making a knife for my wife, here is the hilt made of beating-brass, cut to size and now shaping the slot for the tang of the knife to fit into.

3. Hilt fitted onto the tang of the knife.

4. A select piece of Eucalyptus deadwood drilled a fraction narrower than the tang, epoxy resin applied to the underside of the brass hilt, then the handle tapped on with a mallet until hard-up against the brass. Left to set overnight.

Seriously, Baz, do you have extra hours in your day or something?

Actually, I have very limited time and I go crazy if I'm not being creative. I just take every opportunity to squeeze something into the little time I do have.

I'm waiting on some machinery for the Iron Man suit, so that project is on hold until it arrives. In the mean time, knife-making is it.

Cool. I don't know if I classify as amateur anymore but here is one of the ones I am working on at the moment.

A 3 blade stockman folder.

This next knife is made from a very old and worn out flat bastard file. I've used solid brass carved to shape to form the handle scales.

So the next knife is from some worn out files. I thought I'd get fancy with the back of the blade.

That is very very cool. I wish I had just the talent from your left pinky lol, it'd be a 10 fold improvement over what I have now
