That brought back a lot of great memories of the 90's, thanks so much !
No worries. It got a re-release on PS2 a while back with some spruced up graphics too. (Fast forward to 2:16 to see gameplay).

Good reason to dust off the old PS2, or go grab a PS2 emulator !

Someone remade the arcade game that appears in the last starfighter movie.. here

Was galaxy force arcade the one where you sat in a pod on the ground and it spun around? It might be a racing game im thinking of.

There were special editions of both Afterburner and it's awful sequel G-Loc that featured full 360 degree cabinets. Both were made by SEGA.

Nope, that's not it. It was a cockpit that sat flat on the floor and spun 360. All the hardware was below shoulder height.

Galaxy force had a semi-mobile cab, like later revisions of Afterburner. They didn't allow movement completely upside down, but did allow spinning around on the horizontal plane.

Fuck, I nearly got to play one of those Afterburn full-rotation cockpits as a kid.

Except my wouldn't let me, and instead took a turn for himself.

I never got to have a go in the full 360 cab either. Apparently there was one at Expo '88, but my parents decided to dump me on my grandparents while they went without me.

I share in your angst.

I played 2 different version of GF2 growing up, one was the full 360 spin where the screen followed you at all times (not upside down) with slight up down movement. The other being a static straight forward looking cockpit that you moved up/down left/right.

It's too late to report them to DOCS, isn't it?

The thing was like $6 in coins or something at the arcade in Sydney (ok, fair enough - the cab would've been a bitch to maintain) and Dad took a turn and then proclaimed he was out of change.

Bastard.

I remember the cockpit version.

I always remember thinking that the rewards of spending a shit tonne of my money wasn't worth all the extra time I'd be spending playing other games.

I would however buy one for home

Ask him if the $6 then was worth the $6000 in therapy bills now.
