Default Little Brisbane

Well I think this is a first for me...a video! It's actually a time lapse. The images were shot over 6 months ago and I put the video together 6 months ago also. I have only just managed to find a suitable track to put with it and upload it tonight. I took this idea from someone else on here who I think did a tilt-shift time lapse of Hong Kong (and maybe someone else did one of Sydney?).

I suppose the advantage of a project like this is you can just keep adding scenes. I shot all of these scenes on the one day except the one the sunset over the city which I already had from a star-trail over the city and the sunny day from Kangaroo Point cliffs (which I took the day after all of the others). I don't think the tilt shift effect is the best in all the shots but that's ok.

Shot on a Canon 400D and Canon 10-22.

Let me know what you think and how I can improve.

Thanks for looking,

Martin

P.S. Not sure if it is embedding in the post properly so the link is here --> http://vimeo.com/43456129
I'll try to fix it in the morning.

I'll rewatch it tommorow but from my initial viewing Ive a few comments.

You should use something like LRtimelapse to smooth out the flicker.
I like water/river shots but I think a few of them went a bit long and were one after another. You probably need to break it up a bit

All up though it's good to watch and the music seems to suit "most" of the scenes

Thanks for the comments Squeezer. I can't seem to embed it in the post - any tips from anyone?

Thanks,

Martin

You just copy the last numbers (43456129) and put between [ VIMEO] [ /VIMEO] tags. It is the same for Youtube (you get the last characters in the link and put between the tags rather than the whole hyperlink).

Nice little vid. I found a couple of the sequences didnt quite have enough going on and didnt really feel the music grabbed me at all (or matched what I was watching).

Great effort though. I certainly can appreciate the time it takes to capture timelapse footage and getting it together

Thanks for that re: embedding!

Thanks for the comments too. I found it tough to find a track which suited. The advantage of this sort of thing is I can keep adding scenes when I think about it.

Thanks,

Martin

Enjoyable,

But I agree with the first comments about the flicker, it's quite distracting and actually felt as though it was hurting my eyes. I'm not sure if it's a moving tripod or what, but the scene also moves slightly in some of them?

I quite like it though, some of the scenes really reminded me of landmarks of Brisbane, but some did seem a little stagnant.

It's great though, I've been thinking about doing this for a while

It was quite a windy day so I think that's why there was some movement. I'll see what I can do about the flicker for future attempts.

If light isnt changing significantly then just shoot manual. If light is changing then set the exposure you want for the final frames so that it works its way down to that gradually.

Shooting canon you have the opportunity of using the little bramper as well which is rad!

I'm no pro but a coupla things;
  • As mentioned, flicker is always a detractor. There are software solutions but it's potentially better to control that from the start by shooting in M
  • when composing the shot, think about when you compile the video so you can fill the frame. With a dSLR, it's not like you're going to have resolution issues so zoom out
  • the benefits of shooting in RAW still apply to TL photography. I think some of these sequences could have been brought up a bit
  • as mentioned, one sequence was moving. Was that the tripod (are you using a heavy one or using weights?) Is there a chance it was focus creep?
  • personally, I don't think many of those angles work particularily well with tilt shift applied to it. TS comes into it's own when you're looking down more or there's a lot more seperation between subject and foreground / background. Another issue is sometimes it's obvious that it's an effect and not shot with a TS lens which can detract from the final product
  • did you use a grad filter? They are also important to use when shooting a horizon although in these sequences, the day leant itself to an fairly even shot?

That said, keep shooting this stuff as practice makes better and as boring as shooting it is, it can result in some wonderful output.

Thanks for the tips. I'm not a huge fan of time-lapse (due to large amount of time for minimal output) but I do appreciate good work when I see it so might just keep plugging away at ideas.

This was what you were referring to:

The transition doesn't work well, especially the fade to black than a split second where the next scene is still.

For timelapses, you need movement in the frame. There just isn't much movement unless you're dealing with a busy road here in Australia.

I also think the frame rate was not optimal.

I made the mistake of shooting in Aperture priority mode at the first two locations. Hence the flickering.

Hong Kong was easy because it is very easy to make it look like a miniature via fake TS in PS.
