Default AM3+ mATX. Thoughts?

Hey Guys.

I'm hobbling together an AM3+ System for family.

I have an FX-8320 and am going mATX.

The thing is, I have two valid options for motherboard.

Either the Asrock 970M Pro3 or the Asus M5A78L-M PLUS/USB3.

The Asus is significantly cheaper, but the Asrock is the only 9XX mATX motherboard that has ever been made.

What do you think?

Oh and the system is going to be black / red. My nephew likes red...

simply from pictures, you'll have more luck with the ASrock (less likely to VRM throttle the CPU), also the Asus is blue.
This also goes in the What/Where to buy sub fourm.

Yea, easy enough to get.

Does the job I assume. Any issues at all?

What's it going to be used for? Will you be overclocking?

Given you are 'hobbling' the rig together I'd just go for the cheaper board. Really no point spending on AM3 now.

The Asus does not support disks larger tha 2tb without using a disk locker program. However the disk unlocker program only works on Windows XP and 7.

I'd get the Asrock.

What on earth makes you think that? The ability to read drives larger than 2TB have nothing to do with the motherboard.

I had that mobo - so I speak from experience. I'm not sure of the exact reasons, possible to do with UEFI, or the chipset or something.

Asus Support forums:

http://vip.asus.com/forum/view.aspx?...Language=en-us

Asus 'drivesrs and tools' for the mobo - under utilities the forth option is the disk unlocker program: https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/M5...Desk_Download/

Finally Asus's disk unlocker website:

http://event.asus.com/mb/2010/Disk_Unlocker/

I actually have this board (or at least, a very similar AM3 Asus board) in my backup NAS. Loaded with 6TB drives. I didn't do anything to get it to work on Windows 10... just had it in AHCI mode

Yeah I have a similar Asus which now works with big drives. I think it's the old 780 chipset that does not work, but the more modern ones do. My current 970 chipset works.

See http://www.overclock.net/t/946407/am...-info-database - the ASRock would be the best choice.

I've been using the ASUS M5A78L-M PLUS/USB3 for years, because AMD has not released a CPU in years.

Pluses: Stable. HDMI and VGA. Sound is good.

Minuses: Slow onboard graphics, suitable for old games; 2 PCI slots limit what peripherals you can add.
