Just out of curiosity, why not use an Android tablet? I thought X86 based car PCs were dead.

Android tablets are ok but carpc's can do allot more.

E.g. More Storage, memory, speed, applications...

How much storage do you need :s I have a Galaxy Note 2 with 64gb storage... thats a tonne of music and audiobooks. Can have up to 200GB if I want. Plenty of performance with my custom setup of CM12.1 and I'd argue the applications are far more suited for easy navigation and multimedia use than Windows 8.1 for example. Sorry to drag this off-topic but I want to be convinced CarPCs are superior but I'm just not quite seeing the value...

If having more appellation then every, with much better performance and the latest Windows isn't enough. Not too sure what is.

Btw, I want most of my music on it, that's going to be a minimum of 1Tb.

Another thing, it would allow me to install cctv on the thing.

Suit yourself, but just remember that Windows is going to struggle at things that devices designed for mobility excel at (eg. easy handling of phone calls or turn-by-turn navigation with media playing, voice input and SMS, 3G/4G connectivity, simple, customisable touchscreen UI, apps specifically designed for smaller screens without the use of a web browser, etc). I find it hard to believe that Windows 8 outpaces Android in terms of applications for the road. It's not about quantity, it's about quality, and the overal usability of the device. Performance isn't an issue with recent devices. The last thing you want to be doing though is dicking around trying to switch applications or use a web browser while on the road. Also 1TB is an insane collection of music... it would probably easier just to use something like spotify or Google Music. Or a USB-OTG external HDD, but you will want some serious playlist management or your library will be overwhelming.

As for CCTV, just get a dedicated dash cam.

I believe Windows 10 will be good for a carpc...

Besides, honest question. What are you doing on the overclockers forum? This is where you take the extreme option. Not the tame off the shelf stuff. You views seem ill suited for the tone here.

Possibly, we'll see.

This shit ain't off the shelf. I should probably do a write-up on what I've created, it's pretty unique.

Anyway, back to AM1. Has anyone found a good case ITX case for these? I'd be pretty interested if we could run a whole system off a 19v external PSU.

Looked at AM1 for "upgrading" my NAS from the old i5, but none of the boards I could find had more than 2 SATA ports.

I hope you were planning to do this for energy efficiency because even an old i5 is faster than these chips.

Unless it is software raid and supports the controller. Even with more sata ports, they don't do raid.

The Asrock AM1H-ITX has 4 sata ports.

Yes, I don't need the speed really. It would probably be cheaper to just undervolt the i5 though heh

I just installed an android powered head unit in one of our cars. Goes pretty good. 2 sd card slots, two usb ports so plenty of storage. BT audio and hands free. Turn by turn navigation with voice activation. Reversing camera and dash camera.

Personally I think your crazy using Windows in a car.

Good, let me be crazy. But I'm doing it just the same.

On a side note. I have a Samsung Galaxy Note III with a 5.7" Screen, I also have a factory fitted phone holder in the center console. So it sits right next to me in perfect view.
