Almost seems too good to be true in parts. Will be interested in seeing how it goes in real tests. Especially interested in video encoding - I may just lay my xeons to rest

I suspect its good and true for video encoding. My only concern is gaming. The gaming demos they've shown off don't really demonstrate realistic cases. Low frequency high thread CPUs aren't ideal for gaming, so comparing it to a (what was it?) ~3ghz 6 core instead of a 4.5ghz quad is being particularly selective about the benchmarks. Sure they show a demo against a quad, but its in an extremely easy to run moba and demonstrating video encoding, not really about the game.

RGB stock cooler is pretty funny.

1700 looks beastly for 65w tpd.

Now, what to do with my 2600k @ 4.6 on a Z77 Extreme6 that's been rock solid since late 2012 (?)

I sold my X58 gear last week, and using an old Ivy Bridge i5 right now.. waiting to see how well it clocks, but thinking X370 board and 1700 cpu will be a winning OC combo

The XFR looks like a "bonus turbo", but very conservative, probably to ensure reliability. However, given its the same die, the 1700 should be good to similar speeds as the 1800X

Waiting on initial trustworthy reviews for OC results to base decision on.. only question in my mind is Samsung vs Global Foundries process.

Sure there'll be some binning to get the best chips for top of the line, but they'll be making them in something like 60:30:10 ratio for the 3 chips at release based on economics and demand (many more cheaper SKU's will sell than the 1800X), which means its likely a lot of 1700's are also from Samsung fab, just like the 1800X.

same as what will i do with my 7 year old 1100t that started a s 24 7 small business server then got demoted to the managers computer....still purring along or the 6 year old fx 8350 that is still running

i have amd rigs from as far back as 2007 still going strong only issue is they are all running out of puff and right now worth about 10 bucks including yours so what will you do , i know what i will do....freenas boxes baby
downclocked and loads of drives.
oh and from the other thread

http://wccftech.com/amd-ryzen-7-1700-overclocked-4ghz/

now at those speeds i really think it can take on a 7700k but we will have to wait and see...sort of glad i decided to grab the hero now...although the taichi they mentioned does look very nice.

the other big elephant is the room is how much power and what temps are we going to see...maybe that might be a stumbling block but it can't be anywhere near as bad as the fx range was when overclocked, that is still in my opinion where the intels really shined(power not temps, overclock a 6700/7700k and watch the heat rise )

the Asrock Fatality board is what I have my eye on. 2 x M.2 slots and 5gb network connection. + reports so far of Asus / Asrock achieving higher OC's so far.
