4.5 seems to be the sweet spot looking at what others have achieved, you want to know how much you can undervolt your CPU as much as how far you can push it, if you can get 4.5 @ 1.2v then you got a pretty good overclocker and should be able to get 5Ghz, I did, anything above 4.5 seems to require heaps of additional volts which on IVY translates to massive heat, drop things down to 4.5, drop the volts to 1.2, leave pll where it is and check with AIDA64, if it fails, play with PLL until you get stability, post back how you go with temps and we can discuss next steps if you like, I know it's tempting to push hard but take it slowley and you'll get a great 24x7 overclock without stressing the chip.

Brian
hey mate

ok dropped vcore to 1.2 and cpu multiplier 45 and when to load windows and got BSOD/reboot

now vcore 1.2 cpu multiplier is 44 and so far so good 15mins into AIDA

so does that mean its a crap chip? as i had 46x with 1.25v stable

is BSOD just saying chip was under powered?

cheers

Did you try upping the PLL with Vcore at 1.2, 1.6 might be a bit too low, try setting PLL to auto and vcore to 1.2 and see if it boots, if it does default is around 1.8 so you can try dropping it below that till you find a sweet spot, otherwise no you don't have a crap chip just needs a little of tuning, 1.25v for stable 4.6 is pretty good you just need to find the right mix of settings to get it 100% one you do save the profile so you have a baseline for further overclocks

A bit off topic but he has been giving solid advice since he joined like 3 months ago.
Good going Brian.
Btw. Im overclocking with turbo, not a 24/7, but mine didn't like much being set on auto. It was much better if it was set to normal, if the option was there.

ok finally after a rough morning i currently have AIDA64 running with 4.5ghz vcore 1.21 and PLL at 1.600

interestingly core 2 seems to get the hottest

with temps so far

20mins in

cpu avg 49c
c1 avg 57.9c
c2 avg 63.6c
c3 avg 60.1c
c4 avg 60.2c

couldnt get stable at 4.5ghz vcore 1.200 and PLL under 1.800

cheers

You will def need more vcore to get to 4.5. Mine takes about 1.25v. Good temps so you still have room to play

Ran AIDA for 3hrs temps went up by just under a degree. 4.5 vcore 1.210 and ppl 1.600.

should I go up in only 100mhz steps. eg. 4.6 then 4.7 and so on.

Cheers

Taza you got it mate keep going up by 100mhz steps and up the vcore till you stable,as per my last post play with PLL as well, from here on in the volts needed will get allot more that's why I wanted you to try and get as low as possible 1.21 is excellent start, each chip is different and has it's own limits, but now you have invested the time and understand what your doing, go for it mate and enjoy. I am going on holidays tomorrow and want to see your results when I get back.

Have fun you know all you need to know now to get that chip pumping have fun with it

BTW: 4.5 @ 1.21v is an excellent 24x7 overclock and at the temps your getting you should be right during summer.

edit: Also the diff in the cores is something you can thank Inel and their infinite wisdom for using TIM under the IHS instead of solder means heat transfer is not as even between the cores, this is perfectly normal for IVY.

It is best to go up in 100mhz steps. But there is nothing to say that you must do that. If you feel confident to go from 4.5 to 4.7 then go nuts. The worst thing that can happen is a bsod. I like to write down things i change as i change them, so if i do need to clear cmos i can go straight back to where i was before i crashed.

Dammit Brian you beat me to the punch lol.

LOL sorry just got on and saw the thread was active again, AS Carcin0GEnic says your at the point where you have a great baseline and you understand what and why things are happening, it's time to have fun and find it's limits, make sure you save your BIOS profile and write it down as well in case BIOS get wiped (has happened), I know you have been itching so let it rip and have some fun mate, just remember keep and eye on temps and keep the volts below 1.36.

Brian

well i am very happy with my final outcome 4.6ghz @vcore 1.25 and PLL 1.66

running AIDA64 for an hour so far with good temps

Room temp is is 27.7c
average temps on cores is 60.7c-66.4
maximum temps on cores have been 70c-76c

CPU-Z: http://valid.canardpc.com/show_oc.php?id=2493062

will post stability test in an hour or so

cheers
