The balloon glass / hand warming thing is a crock - unless you a drinking it in an uncomfortably cold environment, room temperature releases all the aroma you'll get out of it.
I've noticed a non-subtle difference between blood-warm and room temp, even when drinking cognac unseasonably in Summer. Warming the cognac allows different volatiles to evaporate. The flavour is definitely different, "hotter", too.

In a baloon, straight, in the highest bar in the world, on the 87th floor in the Jin Mao Building in Shanghai.

It was a great way to make the night view a little more special...

Being a member of the Cigar Society of Australia and New Zealand, I often attend dinners sponsored in part by Hennesey. Straight from the mouth of their representative was the fact that the baloon glass business originated from tastings in the cellars of vineyards in Europe, which as you can imagine are not the warmest environments.

At room temperature in Australia, it doesn't make a lick of difference.

Edit: In fact, the cognac tastings sponsored by Hennesey in Australia never use a balloon glass.

Room temp ranges from around 18 to 25 degrees depending on your comfort levels and where you live. Where as your body temp is just over 30, if you have good circulation to your hands i can see it making a difference.

Well. I was drinking this on friday night.

Unfortunately I didnt have access to brandy glasses, so I was drinking it from a wide(ish) wine glass. Out of interest I let the second glass warm in my hand for longer than the first, it deifnately tasted different, smoother is possibley the best word I could give it.

Now all thats left is to get a set of decent glasses (went looking this weekend and could ony find one set) and a bottle of XO

Its a bit late now but the casino had a stuff up at the bird cage bar a while back, making hennesy vsop only 6 bucks a pop. (i think the price is around the $10 mark). It was like that for a good 3 months before they redid all the prices. So it was the same price as a beer there. Not a bad trade.

I'm just reiterating what the representative from Hennessey told us - perhaps you could try microwaving it and see if that makes it taste even better?

Well, I do think it makes a difference? It is possibley just a placebo effect, but it tastes sharper, it burns more when drank cold.

When I drank it at body temp, it still gave that warming sensation, but didnt 'burn' as much.

It could well be that it had been exposed to air at room temp for so long that it some ethanol had started to evapourate and it was less alcoholic? I really dont know, and it doesnt worry me.

One thing is for sure, it tastes better out of my new brandy glasses

Straight/on-the-rocks/with ginger ale depending on mood and people I'm drinking with.

Tasted the Hennessy XO on friday night.

It is, without a doubt, the tastiest substance I have ever had the good fortune of drinking.

This could become a rather expensive obsession for me...

If its a good cognac the I like to swirl very hot water into a proper cognac glass to heat up it real good. Then pour and swirl to warm everything up. Kick back and enjoy.

I got a bottle of Martell Odys that I picked up in Duty Free, will open that some day. Need to find me some top quality cigars though to go with it

IMO drink it neat or with a bit of water if the alcohol content is a bit much.
