Hi Guys-
just to let you know what's in the pipeline-
the current two builds will be split into four different builds and moved offsite to an independent website, cause it's too difficult updating these forums all the time.
The main differences between the builds will be to cater to different performance levels:

1. Ultra - the same as the current 'ultra' build but with bump-mapping enabled and the correct darkplaces engine to support that. Only for the most powerful and most recent graphics cards/machines.

2. High - functionally the same as the current ultra build, except with all bump-mapping support removed - so, it's about half the size (the bump maps take up about half the texture packs!), which reduces download times and memory usage by half. One or two other tweaks. For the vast bulk of users.

3. Medium - Like the current 'medium' build but much more optimised, and more suitable for lappy's/slightly less high-spec machines/graphics. Again, bump maps have been removed, which compared to the original 'medium' build reduces download size and memory usage significantly.

4. Low - Uses the QRP texture pack and the old models, which is less gritty and pretty but more like the original quake, and uses less memory again. This is a low-spec build for people with older laptops, graphics cards without shader support, and older machines in general. But also for those who want more of a "original opengl quake" experience, but with slightly more "HD" upgraded graphics.

If you've already downloaded one of the current Ultra builds, there's really no need to download one of the above again, unless you're having memory usage problems (in which case try the 'high' build ). Once again, you can enable bump-mapping in your current ultra build by following the instructions in the first post - if you want to decimate your fps.

However, if you've downloaded one of the current medium builds and found performance a bit wanting, you can try this medium build, or for a real retro trip, try the 'low' build.

I've finished these and am just testing them all prior to upload. I'll be in touch-
M

Major hat tip to Internode, and, of course, to the OP.

I shall now download without worrying about my quota.

Edit: Quake on steam is Windows only, so I’ll have to hunt around and hope my original Quake disc is Mac compatible …

Alright guys, it's all go:
http://www.xpfree.org/epsilon

12-12-2011 versions, should be the last, unless for some reason at some point in time I feel like updating...
Biggest differences are:
* Four different build types now
* Better optimisation for lower builds
* Some stuff fixed for mission pack downloads
* Directory names changed to lowercase for linux compatibility
* A few tweaks

So, here's the new build types:

Ultra - like the current one but with bump-mapping enabled
High - like the current ultra but without bump-mapping support, half the memory usage and download size
Medium - like the current medium but far more optimised for performance
Low - Unlike any of the current builds, more 'old-style'-looking quake, for older machines and machines without shader support, as well as for those looking for 'retro-quake' HD.

Paths for those who currently have a build:

Ultra - Working fine, no problems - don't redownload
- Working fine but want bump-mapping - follow instructions in first post to enable bump-mapping
- Memory/loading-time issues - download the new 'High' build instead
- Too much CPU/GPU usage, sluggish - download the new 'Medium' build
- Not like 'old quake' - download the new 'Low' build

Medium - Performance okay, no problems - don't redownload
- Performance sluggish - download new 'Medium' build
- Performance really bad/really sluggish - try the 'Low' build
- Not enough like 'old quake' - download the 'Low' build.

From now on all downloads are on the new website (see above). But I'll retain info for the older builds in the first post of this thread.
There's internode links (a few missing at present, but megaupload links for those) & torrents available.
Thanks muchly to Thelen for seeding the new torrents.

Merry Christmas all

BTW there was a bug in the low build (textures missing for slime) which's fixed now - new torrent & downloads.

Check steam every day though as it might go 75-90% off on a daily deal.

Hell to the yeah. Old school fragging just in time for the Chrissy break.

It may be time to settle a few old scores.

Just thought I would note, though I haven't updated the website yet,
internode's accepted the High and Ultra builds:
http://games.on.net/filelist.php?app=9&menu=2

The ultra build is a special one I whipped up - includes the mission pack 1 and 2 files, and all pk3 files have been extracted. And it's a 7zip.

The plus side:
It's 1.2GB smaller to download
It loads a bit faster

The minus side:
It's more difficult to upgrade with later versions of the included quake mods
~5000 files instead of ~900

You'll need 7zip to extract it.

The initial reason I made it was to fit into moddb's size limitations, but they've decided not to host it anyway-
Lol!
