Why do you 'need' IS? It is a pretty wide angle zoom..?

Glad it's not an IS upgrade... Will keep my current 24-70 for sometime still!

I am more interested in the 24 2.8 IS, although I have NO idea why that has IS either.

Ooh nice. Glad to see it is finally an internal focus unit & not a push/pull. I just might be tempted to sell mine & update it. Hope they reduced some of the CA too.

Interestingly they've added a zoom lock to the lens. Didn't really think it would be necessary.

Looks very very interesting.
The improved MTF charts look good, especially towards the edges of the frame, though admittedly I've yet to find my mk1 wanting.

The reduction in weight and size would be more than welcome, the mk1 is a pig. I owned the 24-105 before that, and the mk2 looks a bit closer to that in dimensions.

82mm filter thread

Also, pricing is a $900 USD markup on the original
It better be spectacular.

Seems all updated lenses are getting a ~50% markup...

Mk1: $1,399
Mk2: $2,299

64% markup

I can't say i'm surprised.

The 100 macro & 70-200 2.8 IS II spring to mind.
Each of the super tele's and even the tc's all received considerable markups.

I remember a time when canon lenses were considerably cheaper than their (albeit sharper) nikon counterparts.

edit:

For those that were expecting an image stabilised model, using the canon pricing sheme that would put it somewhere the vicinity of a million dollars

Mk1 retail is actually $1,849.95. But you can get them for as little as $1200. The same will happen when this one come out.. it will probably start under 2k and slowly work down from there.

I'm quoting American RRP, which should be significantly closer to true price for those of us that aren't willing to pay "Australia tax"

AFAIK there's no indicative Australian RRP yet, but i'd expect a rude shock

I think you'll find it's a Telescoping zoom (not push/pull) and by the looks of it, it still is. ^_~

More importantly it's now shortest at 24mm, unlike the old model. That will also mean that it now has the hood hanging off the moving part.

Very strange the lack of IS. Sure who cares if you're shooting people, but for stationary subjects it would've been popular.

money money money

nothing else left to upgrade, lenses have hit a a brick wall decades ago.
all other possible upgrades (past the brick wall limit) cost way too much, you wouldnt pay for them.

gotta give people an "upgrade" even if it's pretty much imaginary, you cant have a lens that has not been upgraded for decades.

money money money
