I got a Sony 10X IDE burner and have been having trouble with it. Not only does it have the icky cheap-plasticy-IDE-burner feel to it (why are they all like that these days? feels like you need to buy a new one every 6 months)...
I have had an Abit BE6-II, running a P3 600/100 at 800/133 for ages. Now, I have normally have the PCI divider set to 1/4. However, the burner seems to occasionally stop working completely. It will be fine for a few days then crap out, won't read or write CDs, and win2k complains i've unplugged the device (even tho its Internal). Really annoying when it decided to crap out in the middle of burning CDs - nero and explorer would lock up, the IDE bus light would go on permanently, the CD eject button stopped working, and after hard reset I end up with a coaster Its the only device on its IDE port, i tried swapping cables, swapping IDE ports, kept happening. Tried disabling UDMA and forcing PIO MODE to the slowest in the BIOS (but I think it only affects hard drives, not ATAPI devices). Still happened. I went back to 600/100 for a while, and the problem seemed to vanish - I burned 5 cds over 2 nights without problems. My theory is that the PCI divider doesn't affect the IDE ports and that the overclocking is killing the burner somehow. Is this possible, or am I full of it? Anyhow, I was just wondering what people's experiences were in this area of problems with CD burners... Thanks |

my only thought is that might be a glich in the cpu although it works fine in games and apps when it come to data streaming it might shit itself every so often. other than that pull the burner out put it another machine and see if it does the same if it does send it back and claim under warrenty.
i would be leaning to the cpu though might have troubles streaming the data properly. there are lots of things it could be the worst part is trying to workout which one it is. ram cpu mobo (might have a glich on the ide data stream) hdd cant handle the data stream properly. cdrw is just fubard is you ram pc133 or pc100 if it 100 overclocked this might cause the problem but i doubt it hope it helps

I am using kingmax PC150, so the ram shouldn't be the problem. It runs prime95 torture test without failure for over 24 hours. I've never once seen a win2k BSOD or machine lockup (Yay for intel hardware). Not to mention that my other IDE devices are working just fine.
Anyhow, the burner now does not WORK AT ALL at any bus speed ! I powered it up one morning and the IDE bus light was stuck on, drive didn't detect, I can't even get my damn CD out. What was I saying about these cheap plasticy shitty IDE cd burners... *!&@#^(*!@&^#(@!*&#^@#! |
