Default Windows XP home networking problems

A mate is helping me do this so i will let him post my request for help. Many many thanks in advanced.

I am having problems getting XP to network with Win98se and Linux. I can't ping from or to XP however i can see the machine using smbclient. Win98se can't find a share on the XP box. It also XP can't see a share on the Win98 Box. There is not a firewall running. Below is a list of services running on the XP box. The cable has been checked using ping between a Windows box and a linux box.
