Yeah but you have to deal with that horrible installer (admittedly for those familiar with FreeBSD it's easy and straight forward to use, but for new users - no way).

Also, although the documentation is good, as are the configuration files, you still often have to do a lot of stuff you don't with Linux - eg setup hardware, load kernel modules. There's no "plug-n-play" mount of drives, mounting of other drives etc as you would find in Mandrake 9.

And the kernel configuration section of the handbook is not too great either.

hmmmmm, maybe i should just kick slackware off and just install OpenBSD? or do you recommend FreeBSD? I like to be secure, and OpenBSD being the most secure i think thats what I'd choose

Well all the BSDs are a good choice for security; a well-configured FreeBSD is also quite secure.
