Default XBOX hit by lightning - replacing and transferring account

On Sunday night, my house got hit big time by a lightning surge. Actually, the huge 40 metre pine tree up beside the house got hit and exploded 2/3 the way up, bringing down about 1 tonne of tree trunk and branches onto the garage and spreading large pieces of tree up to 50m away in neighbouring yards and rooftops. Quite an experience for the missus and I who were in the house, about 5m from the tree outside... luckily for us, the trunk didn;t come through the roof otherwise, well, I wouldn't be writing this.

My TV, sound system, Air Con, loads of stuff got fried, as did the so-called surge protectors which apparently used my TV, XBOX and networking gear for their own protection.

So my beloved Xbox 360 got fried. It won't power up and it smells burned. I'll be replacing it but was wondering what happens these days with my account and my game saves etc. Assuming the HD on the unit is dead (may not be, but assuming it is), and I don't have anything saved to the new cloud service, do any of my game progression positions, scores, etc, get tied to my account?

Once I have a new Xbox, what is the normal procedure to get back and running?

Quite likely the HDD has gone as well. Unless you saved/backed up your save games to the cloud or USB, you'll be starting your games from scratch.

When it comes to things being 'tied' to your gamertag, it'll be things like licenses to DLC & Foxtel on 360.

Considering that you may have lost everything (pending whether the HDD works), there really isn't anything you have to do, unless you had DLC & want to re-download it.

Recovering your gamertag onto a new console is simple. DLC however is a slightly different story. When you download DLC, the content is tied to 2 things, your gamertag & the console ID of which you downloaded it onto. If you play Xbox signed into Xbox Live 24/7, all you'll have to do is re-download the DLC you want, via the Download History in the Account Settings (I think).

If you play Xbox offline sometimes, but want to play some DLC, you must log into Xbox.com.au with your Live/Hotmail account & transfer the licenses of all DLC etc from your original console ID, to the new console ID. The transfer process guides you & is easy. However, there is a limit as to how many times you can transfer licenses (3 months I think).

Hi kizzav

Thanks a lot. Perfectly answered. Yes, I think the whole Xbox is destroyed. C'est la vie.

Cheers.
