I'm thinking about getting a 3570k for my "4x4 project" (4 cores at 4Ghz) to replace my old clunky 2005 single core 2Ghz desktop.

* Is one able to hit 4Ghz on stock voltage with a 3570k easily?
* Will I need a third-party cooler or will the stock one suffice?

Better yet, how far can you go with the stock voltage?

I had 4.2 at stock voltage on mine (1.16 volts). You will probably need a cooler master hyper 212 to keep temperatures at bay, They are fairly cheap. I have mine at 4.4 1.2 volts and temps don't go over 65 with a 612 cooler.

My 3570k is 4.2 @ 1.16, temps around 70 with stock cooler running prime.

I can't get my 3570K stable past 4.6 on H2O, even at 1.5V it won't prime at 4.7 for much more than a few seconds before BSOD kicks in, 4.8 won't boot into windows. Anyone got any clever suggestions? I'm stable at 4.6 around 1.36V no problems but seem to have some kind of invisible barrier.

1. cpus do have invisible barriers, you may have hit it.
2. load line calibration, set to high or ultra
3. CPU PLL voltage, set between 1.8-1.825

check ram timings and voltages.

Cheers, interestingly my Mobo only has 3 options for LLC being Auto, 100% or 50%.

So I've finally come into the 21st century and upgraded my pc:

Got the following:
# Antec 750W High Current Gamer Power Supply
# ASRock Fatal1ty Z77 Professional MB
# G.Skill 16GB (4x4GB) DDR3 Kit, PC-17000 (2133Mhz), RipjawsZ, 11-11-11-30-2N, Dual / Quad Channel Kit
# Intel Core i7 3770K - Batch 3218B354
# Sandisk 240GB Extreme SSD

Loving it so far...

After some advice for a cooler, running the stock one at the moment... Want to go for some conservative overclocking on air. Haven't OC'ed in a while not since the old Duron AMD days... What's a decent cooler for this rig that can get me 4GHz or better?

Currently on stock cooler it gets to about 77D when I fire up Prime 95... Should I expect this to come down by a lot with a better cooler and thermal paste?

Thanks

Hmmmm a Coolermaster hyper 212 evo should keep temperatures down - I have a 3570k with a 612 pwm and at prime it doesn't go over 65 at 4.4GHz

Yeah getting something like a Hyper 212 Evo is a good choice for 4.0-4.5GHz and not too expensive. Noctua NH-D14 will provide better cooling if you're after a better overclock.

Temps should be around 60 degrees under full load with a Hyper 212 Evo on a stock 3770k

Both look like good options, I read the Noctua NH-D14 sometimes struggles with ram height. Recon I'd have any issues with this with the Asrock and the ram I've chosen, the DIMM's aren't too high so I think it should be ok...

Might order one shortly...

Also gonna get one of these:
Asus Geforce GTX670 DirectCU II TOP (1058Mhz), 2GB GDDR5 (6008Mhz).

http://noctua.at/main.php?show=compa...n#DDR3_G.Skill According to that you'll be fine, worst case is you'll have to mount the 120mm fan on the NH-D14 a little higher
