It will be interesting to see if the other game-engine developers also begin investigating Linux support given these findings.

Even if developers choose not to reverse-engineer existing titles, having a good chunk of future titles available on Linux would be a god-send.

I know of four major game engines off the top of my head. IdTech, Source, Unreal Engine and Crytek. Has anyone heard of these developers dipping their toes in the Linux waters?

iirc, All unreal engines up to and including Unreal 2004 worked on linux (and the games came with linux installers).

ID software have done heaps on linux as well, selling major titles with linux installers (Doom 3 is the most recent I can remember), as well as open sourcing their old titles (eg quake3 arena -> openarena)

Source stuff is happening now

Crytech I don't think have ever looked into it. I did try the original farcry under wine many years ago, but it was missing lots of important textures... like ladders :/

All of 'em except Crytek create Linux-portable engines. Unreal, particularly, is a platform slut.

Looking forward to a release in the future. I'd even be keen for a OCAU L4D2 night if anyone is game.

I picked up Quake 3 LINUX edition in it's collectable cookie tin box from Crazy Prices a few months after Q3 came out... Wow that's a long time ago now.
I was actually quite surprised to see Linux versions in retail packaging at the time.

The software required Win95 or better, so I installed Linux.
Question marks are the new full stop?
