Default How to update Android?

Hey guys I need to update Android but Im finding it a little confusing trying to find the right version and where to download it. Currently using the stock version (i'm guessing) on a samsung galaxy s.

Also I'm guessing updating Android wipes everything?

I'm sure someone here can help me out. Thanks!

Download Samsung Kies, it will let you do a backup and download a new update if there is one available.

I agree though, the version numbers did my head in, when I updated my SGS2 I fumbled my way through and everything works ok...so far.

Let Kies do it for you, if you update to the wrong version it can screw with everything (particularly if your modem changes, means you might not have access to the right frequencies).

http://www.samsung.com/au/support/us...tware/KIES/JSP

Just download this and install it.
Backup your phone (not always necessary, but a HIGHLY recommended precaution)
Choose firmware upgrade.

Enjoy whatever your latest official firmware is.

Now, once you can do this, you can start looking at more custom versions, which might give you newer Android versions, but unofficial releases. This is usually done with ODIN, which is basically flashing software. Just make sure that you get the right version (usually a single file to make it easy).

Unofficial/International Firmware updates:

Good luck

If you've never upgraded software on your Galaxy S, I highly recommend you to do so ASAP. This is assuming that it still runs 2.2 Froyo. 2.3 Gingerbread brings must needed stability tweaks and some new features. To do so, download Kies.

If you want some custom software, try searching up in the Galaxy S category in xda developers. I'm pretty sure there probably is some 4.0 Ice cream Sandwich ROM on there by now.

A strong warning to the OP..
I've got a SGS2 and with the latest version of Kies i'm not able to connect my phone with no solution in site yet and Voda just informed me of ICS update
Now it may be just me or you might get the same issue. ATM i'm downloading a previous version of Kies to see if that works from http://www.samsung.com/au/smartphone...downloads.html
Hopefully you dont have any issues tho

Ah completely forgot about updating through Kies!

All good now and the latest version is great! Thanks guys!

Only one problem - in this version I can't seem to click on text messages and view them full screen anymore... what gives?
