Default FX 4170

Was wondering if anyone has seen any reviews or has even gotten their hands
on the FX-4170 if so what are your opinions on it compared to the other FX's

Fastest clocked retail CPU at 4.2Ghz out of the box

Heard its not the greatest clocker but I could be wrong, good for a cheapish gaming box u don't have to fiddle with

There are some pretty good reviews of it on OCN. From what i read, it'll get to the same clocks that a 4100 will get to.

Just remember its basically a dual core with 'hyper threading' in intel terms... its not a true quad...

That's right, and they carry all the same performance/watt issues its full '8 core'
leaving it in the awkward position of being faster than a Phenom II quad single threaded, but slower Multithreaded.

I grabbed one to play with, and they are fun.. managed 5Ghz fairly stable 1.5v on a noctua 120 Cooler, and can bench a bit higer ( would continue to scale if I pushed it and had better cooling).

With PH II discontinued, It and the 4100 are the best/only options for cheap, multi unlocked OCing fun, its just a shame they offer nothing over the awesome value true quads of old.

I just got my hands on an FX-4170.
I was able to boot into Windows at 5.2Ghz last night at 1.5v but it crashed under stress testing conditions .
Temps were really good under a custon H20 loop though...but i think there is a problem with coretemp. I had to add 13c to the offsets. It read 46c in AI Suite though.

I have had to underclock it to 3.990Ghz for a little while though in order to comply with HWBOT rules for benching. I'll get back to max clocks again over the next few days

if you can get that 955 to 4ghz+ you wolud be hard pressed to see the difference compared to a 8150/2500k in most games.

if you mainly game then you are going to see a bigger performance increase from a gpu upgrade anyway, I would either save for haswell/steamroller or drop your money on a gpu (depending on what you have ATM)
