The way i see it, 2x 4gb 680GTXs will last a lot longer than a 690, that's the way I am going. much like 2x 3gb 580's play nicer than the 590GTX (2x 1.5gb)

Dont even consider gtx690 for that. Waste of money. Look at the gtx670 at most or even 7850 if you like to save money.

It would be a nice and significant upgrade from a 295.

2 x 680's will smash a 690, and if you have any issues with SLI on a game just disable one of the 680's.

Yeah by a whole 5% - 10% based on the reviews out there so far. And having to disable 1 card, well... not much of a smashing anymore would it?

With the current pricing, no way in hell it can be justified for the performance gained.

On which planet is this exactly?

680 SLI outperforms a GTX690 at 1600p and higher resolutions by 2 - 5%. At 1080p they are usually 1 - 2 FPS apart which is statistically irrelevant.

In my time I've had 4 multi-gpu setups:

8800GTS 512mb (G92) SLI
GTX 295
5870 crossfire
GTX 480 SLI

I have only had micro-stutter issues with G92 SLI, though since then so many more games are now optimized for SLI/Crossfire compared to back then. I haven't experienced stutter myself with any of the other three solutions I've had, so it's a big non-issue unless somehow you were severely bandwidth limited I would guess (Obviously today's chipsets are barely traditional chipsets as well, G92 days were also when Core 2 was considered high end and we have a truck more load BW now with newer architectures since the i7 was released)

I'd say if you only plan to game on a single monitor the 680 should be enough

But, if you have SLI plans, I'd think it'd be best to get one 690 now. I no longer see the point in being one of the "buy one now get another one later" kind of guys because you'll want the newer GPUs that come out (as usually is the case with me at least, I usually get two GPUs from the get go)

The only reason I could justify getting 680 SLI against a 690 which, as stated, is at least as 95% as fast is if you needed 4GB 680s in SLI - and this would only be needed for the select few that want to run a really high res, have 3 high res monitors for surround etc as the extra vram would be of interest to them if they can justify the price.

I'd only ever go crossfire or SLI if I had a multimonitor set-up. Other than that, buying a 690 for one or even two screens sounds silly.

For me personally I just really can't be bothered with sli, meh. Happy with single cards.

Not for bf3 ultra at 120hz. 60hz bit silly though!

Buy what you like. If you want to pay more money for a 690 than 2 x 680's then go ahead.

690's are 2 x 680's that are underclocked, and more expensive.

I only play games at 2560 x 1600.

If you game at 1080p then honestly you don't need sli in the first place.

I'm getting the 690 cause I want to maintain constant FPS above 120 for my 120Hz monitor.
