Default need high sequential

I have some throwaway (replaceable/read only) data I need to read very fast. Its about 300GB but may get a bit bigger. I was thinking of getting 8 x 64GB M4s and a RocketRaid 2720SGL.

The rocketraid can do up to 3GB/second, which is quite amazing for it's price. it is suited to 8 m4s which can do about the same.

this setup is far far cheaper than the revodrives, and faster as well. so i thought this is my best bet. do you have any other ideas for alternatives?

note: i don't think hard drives can compete price wise either with the ssds even for sequential!

hdd's could if 1TB and below prices actually settled down. Only 2TB and greater have really done what they should have.

But in theory 8x 320GB single platter drives would probably do what you need.

And once delivered, are you sure you get under $1600 (I just had a Revodrive3 X2 Maxiops delivered for that, after customs, gst and shipping - i had to go to the US, because Aus retailers wanted $2300+ for it.)

Also the revo will be somewhat simpler and less likely to fail (4 drives vs 8)

8 mechanical sata would only net you around 800mb/s at best.

12gb/sas is coming soon too

With Large stripe sizes and AV style linear data sets - i'm sure you'll get 110-140MB/sec per member.

short stroking the mechanicals would help too.

i was a bit worried actually buying a revodrive and compatibility with HP g7 servers. no way to test beforehand!

HP have been working for FusionIO for a while and have products that are certified.

Revodrive incompatibilities are usually surrounding motherboards with;

1. Low amounts of Option ROM space due to bloated bioses and the like
2. Shared PCIE slot bandwidth (although this is performance related)
3. S3/S4 power states (Revodrives prefer S1) (this is ongoing BSOD related)

Server motherboards are USED to having boat loads of Option rom space (because you want to stick multiple hba's and raid adapters in there).

I guess if you are truly worried about compatibility, unfortunately you'd have to either;

1. Find somoene who has a G7 with a Revodrive in it working and discuss
2. Buy locally on the proviso that you can return if it doesn't work.

There is also the Z-Drive R4 if you want ludicrous transfers (2.8GB/sec + a gazillionty iops) - http://www.oczenterprise.com/ssd-pro...-c-series.html

Bring your wallet though - $5600 for 800GB and 20PB writes.

See if your wallet can handle a few of these

http://datastoragesys.com/pdf's/Pliant%20Lightning%20Datasheet.pdf

or maybe some newer models (Note they have been aquired by Sandisk now)

http://www.sandisk.com/Assets/File/p...ing_6GB_DS.pdf

Note..... they do pop up on Graysonline every now and then.
