If it keeps "corrupting itself" you have other problems outside of arma.

DayZ via the steam version is the easiest way to get it running. I even forced the beta patch upon mine and got that running aswell.

Steam kept saying it had files to verify when I rechecked the cache.

I ended up using some ARMA reps installer.exe on Steam forums to install it after I used their latest beta patch too. Just also had to update the code files to 1.6.0.1 from 1.6.0.0.

I'm stuck waiting in a server at the moment, but apparently that's the servers fault - according to other players.

Go to U.S servers, you'll be in much much quicker.

I managed to get in. Still have no idea what I'm doing. I was just running around killing/getting killed by Zombies.

You're forgetting the "quicker" bit. You need to read the post I quoted to get the context. Ozzy servers just take soooo long to actually spawn into the game, sometimes 5+ mins of staring at the black "attempting to connect to server" or whatever msg screen. I can get in a U.S server and be playing within 2 mins.

So... what's the objective of the game then? I couldn't see anything on the map and my compass doesn't come up.

Tents and Vehicles are the only "items" that do not transfer when you swap servers

Everything else you will retain.

Nah your character and possition is saved and follows you to any server
