I currently have an X58a-UD3R 930 at 4 ghz with 12GB
Picked up an an Intel 520 SSD 240gb, and a few weeks later a Crucial M4 512Gb from the US for under $400...
Then a bit later replaced the 930 with second hand i7 970 6 core chip - this doesn't overclock as high, using 3.85ghz, but man it runs a good 10 degrees cooler.... and much faster when using all cores off course

At the time I got the SSD, I also bought an Asus P9X79, 3930k and 16GB ram.
3930k at 4.4ghz - runs pretty hot compared to the 970, and about the same as the 930 at 4 ghz, but warmer at idle without Speed Step and C1E (need to turn these off for audio work)

I've already swapped between the 2 systems in my FT02 case a few times - becoming an expert in removing and installing the motehrboards now...
And I can say the X79 posts, and boots much faster, especially if have AHCI mode. The UD3R is way slow in posting, double that withe AHCI on...
And the SSD are twice as fast! Intel 500/500, Crucial 500/250 vs 350/200 for both on the UD3R - plus copying between the two SSD on the same Marvell channel bogs the system a bit, like they share the same bandwidth...
Need to try again on the regular Intel SATA2 channels, should be around 200mb/s with no bogging.

I can backup the 120Gb OS filled drive in 6-8 mins on X79, 20+ mins on X58 with Shadow Protect
Even my 3TB Seagate will hit over 200mb/s on the x79 board!

I've been thinking about settling with the x58 for now and sell the x79 system. The 970 isn't that much slower than the 3930k at the same clock speed, and runs much cooler, but the 3930k can clock higher and so can be up to 30% faster.
I can live with the slower drive speeds most of time, which is still much faster than before.

one thing - X79 can install windows 7 from DVD, on the Intel 520 SSD in under 15 mins....

The Gigabyte boards are notorious for slow boots, this may have something to do with your slow boot times.

Does that apply for their X79 boards?

I've noticed the P9X79 is quite similar to the old P4P800 I had back in the Pentium 4 days. Seems like each company carries the same features and style across each generation - ie how the Asus board will blink the power light when sleeping, and you can wake it up from keyboard, something I missed on the Gigabyte side
But I also prefer the Gigabyte boot order bypass method by pressing F12 on post, and the order can be hardwired for USB, CD and HD. The Asus will shuffle these around depending if a USB stick is inserted or not....

Well I can report that the upgrade has resulted in a MUCH quieter rig. Power consumption is also dramatically better too - although with a PSU change involved too that may not be directly related to the new CPU

Both my systems are near silent - it's down to the case, fans used - and what speeds they run at, and components

My Kingwin 1000w power supply is completely silent at under 500w load, the fan doesn't move
Even when it does spin, it's still near silent from 1m away
