Likewise with the motherboard I'm using a Rampage 3 Gene which (from everything I read prior to purcahse) is also a quality board.

Lol are you saying my RAM is only worth $100? I hope it hasn't depreciated that much in the four weeks I've had it... Anyways that's fine, just thought I'd throw it out there.
I didn't know that either until I saw it with my own eyes. Actually was doing around 2200mhz with a small BLCK overclock on a total piece of crap GA-P67A-UD3R not even B3. Pretty sure it can go higher as there is no signs of instability at 2200mhz. Did about 10 3Dmark06 runs @ 2200mhz.

I've bought a brand new 16GB 2133mhz G.skill kit 2 weeks ago for $140, so I'd say it's worth around $100 now

Thanks everyone for your contributions, I really appreciate it and I've learned a lot about working with the 1366 platform

The playing feild is thus:
  • Sold the 24gb 2133. Didn't quite make my money back but this is OCAU lol. Since there was obviously no way all 24gb of it was going to run at 2133mhz I decided I'd rather have the $. The best I could've probably done was 12gb of it at around 1400mhz with the 920, and I'd still have one spare stick if I sold one kit.
  • Picking up an i7-950 tomorrow night.
  • Since C-BuZz reckons he can't get his 2133 to run any faster than 1866 with his 960, I'm thinking I'd be lucky to get anything faster than 1866 with my 950 so I'll probably get some 1866.
  • Hopefully can get 12gb 1866 or 2000 off ramexperts on eBay for ~$100, with slightly tighter timings, and go from there.

Thanks again everyone

Oh boy, looks like this could be deadly....

Whether or not the 1366 or I die first will be the question...If you don't hear back from me once my RAM turns up, you'll know it won

basically

1366 cpu (all of them)ram memory controller works like this.

limited bandwidth intel specs

6 banks of ram at 1333 ddr3
or 3 banks at 1600

from intel specs...

at the time people could not run +get full bandwith from 6x 1600 ddr3 sticks, (benchies slowed down to 1333)

its possible to run 2 sticks a 1866+

It all depends on your cpu's internal mem controller, my system can run 12 gb/ 6 sticks at 1600 mhz cas 6, or up to 1800 mhz cas 7

Current 24/7 setup with 6 x 2GB DDR1600 sticks. Can do 4.5Ghz/DDR1800 ish but it's pretty unstable. Haven't really bothered to try get stable higher than DDR1600. Set & forget settings

Talk about resurrection or of a dead thread!

Before I cracked the shits with the R3G and got the 1155 gear (off C-Buzz), I got the 12gb (that I also got off C-Buzz, by the way, what was the go with those 1gb FBDIMMs man? Never got a PM back from you ) running stable at 1750.

That was 3x 4gb sticks of Patriot Sector 7 2000, 9-11-9-27 IIRC. Might've been 11-11-11-27. Either way, I had it at 8-9-8-25 or so at 1750 with the CPU at up around 3.5ghz.

The uncore freq was killing it, as I explained in my PM to you neutralizer.

What CPU are you running anyway?

Yeah your PM pretty much nailed it with the benefit of hindsight, unfortunately I had already ordered the RAM at that stage and there is a no returns policy. I can run it at 1900 stock timings (but its pretty unstable). 1800 is more doable, but due to the mem multis avaliable on the X58/i7 920 combo, it means I have to settle for a lower overclock on the CPU, so 1600 is pretty much it once all things considered.

Exactly like yourself, the uncore seems to be ceiling at about so 3.6ghz, so the 1800mhz mark on the DRAM.
Kind of annoyed that I spent excess on the RAM, but not as bad as it could have been (would have been really pissed if it didn't recognise all of it). And I'm pretty sure I paid about the same for 6GB of ram 3 years ago, so can't really whinge about the price to be honest.

Just reading up on intel stuff again, working out whether or not a move to 2011 is justifiable or if I'll hang on to this and wait for a new architecture (maybe hunting around for a Xeon in the meantime or something).

EDIT: This post has the info on where I have ended up at.

Its in this thread:

The classic case of shouldn't have rushed into it and should have researched more. Funny, in the uni days I had lots of time to work out the optimal solution but couldn't afford it. Now I can afford it, but never have the time to work out what 'it' is
