hey guys i'm looking at upgrading the ram in my i7 920 and before you say anything yes the 920 is a very out dated cpu im currently clocked at 3.8ghz and am very stable but i need more ram as when i bought this it that long ago i only really needed 6g but now i need more as battlefeild 3 takes alot of ram. anyway my question is this
can i use new types of ram in my older system i looked at the supported list for my mobo but unfortunaly they dont update it so i have no idea if the new ram can be used i'm looking at Kingston DDR3 8GB (2x4GB) PC-12800/1600 CL9 HyperX Ram model: KHX1600C9D3T1K2/8GX i'm usure how to tell if it will be compatable if anyone can help that would be appreciated i have serched high and low and cant find any new info for my gen of cpu and motherboard. thanks in advance.

"Very" outdated? They're barely 3 years old or something. New RAM should be fine.

In the real world you probably won't notice a huge amount of difference if you do drop back to dual channel. |

It'll work fine, but it won't be as fast as using triple-channel RAM.
As Jim G has said, the CPU is built for triple-channel. People are moving away from triple-channel simply because new CPUs aren't designed to use it, but this doesn't affect your CPU.

This ram the one your getting : http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?...ducts_id=18886 ???
Id just get something like this : http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?...ducts_id=16020 Save money and having it run in tri channel will be more efficient. Sell your 6gb of old ram for $20-30 and your set. Ive never actually noticed bf3 hurt from 6gb of ram but then i didnt pay particular attention to the usage ( but the 2x550tis might be the ones hurting if all the eye candy is on)

Thanks for all the info guys I ended up going with a 6g Kingston hyper x kit and added it too my 6g corsair to make 12g although the speeds are different.
Azalin I'm pretty sure its the ram as it doesn't lag in single player mode with everything maxed but when I Have internet explore open and the battle log chat app it lags if I have more than one ie open it lags instantly I've over clocked the 550'a to 1000mhz also when out does start lagging if I turn the settings too high instead i ultrat still lags.
