haha woah, that is seriously a huge difference to what I was seeing.
was really tempted to run prime95 on it just to see what would happen, but didnt want to kill it before exam time for the mrs.
they came and took it away last thursday, now just gotta wait for the "repair" and we will see how it goes. guarantee after a month or two it will just go back to how it was.

I can only assume that replacing the heatsink and TIM will give it another few months of life, then when it dies again it will be hello free replacement.

unit came back yesterday, I'm happy with it for the moment I guess. Repair papers said

booted to windows
ran HP stress test - FAIL (no surprise there)
updated bios to F29 with improved thermal control
replaced thermal module
ran HP stress test - PASS

she is running about 55c all cores at idle/low load. Much better than the 70 it was before, but still not "cool". Have to see what happens when we get around to Spring

that is nucking futz!

At work i have a bin's filled with DV6's most have dead motherboards from overheating. we re-use keyboards and screens mostly to repair damaged DV6's. Of all the notebooks they the most common to come through the door to be repaired and the one most mostly likely to be a write off.

better luck next time.

Sell it on eBay for parts

or

one time frisby
target practice for gun range
paper weight
door stopper
reef in an aquarium
a birthday present for a kid you dont like
a foot warmer
the dvd can be a cup holder
use the smooth screen as a surface for cutting lines of coke
paint it in creepy colors and call it art. (may require additional stand)
put in in the fridge for 24hours, beat it with a baseball bat until there is nothing left, apparently revenge is a dish best served cold.

i am sure there are many other things you can do with it, i just can not think of them all right now.

friends don't let friends buy HP DV series notebooks mmmkkkayyy!

yes, there is actually, if you create a new thread seeking other members with the same, or similar model laptops that are faulty (believe me there are plenty) and take any working parts from all those laptops and sit down and build a working laptop from those parts, and show HP just how you build a laptop properly.

to be honest, the DVx series of laptops have always been plagued with issues, and all i suggest is that anyone out there who has been hit with a HP brick that they just warn others not to touch them.

i saw a guy walk out of HN last weekend with his parents, carrying a DV6 laptop box, and he was wearing a big grin, and i very politely wished him well with his purchase, and told him to be sure to keep the reciept, because he just may be needing it very soon.

DW i expect it to fail soon anyway. definitely not going to put up with their shit if they want to replace with the same model

Hp seem to have a problem with laptops, and I would have thought the had learnt there lesson with the ZD8000 series. Really have to think of the quality control and what steps they go through to get a product launched.
