Hi McRutch,

My name is Luis and I'm with Adaptec Tech support.
Cables can have an impact on performance if they are low quality as they can affect reliability of the delivery of the packets.

If you see that there are link failures being reported in ASM, then this could be the case.

If you have specific issues or concerns and would like our assistance, you can contact us through the web at http://ask.adaptec.com

it doesn't allow you 36 HDDs, the 36 ports is including the 2 incoming connections (8) ports and the 1 external out (4) (for daisy chaining)

so you can really only connect 24 hdds, perfect for a 4224

EDIT:

i've just today tried moving drives around in my norco 4224, it takes ages, but it does eventually pick them back up no matter where theyre installed...
Thanks for that. I was considering that but didn't know if it would work.
On another note, even though it is not listed by Adaptec, I have x8 7200rpm Hitachi 4tb working fine in raid 6 . So with the norco and Chenbro I could go 24X4tb ! unless the norco or chenbro have issues with 4tb drives.
Anyone else tried 4tb with the above configuration ?

Yeah the 4tb Hitachi 7200rpm work fine with the 5805 so far.
Took almost a week to do a online expansion from the x8 1.5tb raid 6 I had before. Then when I tried to expand the 9tb partition to 24tb , windows 7 64 bit complained about exceeding the max clusters as I had formatted the 9tb in 4k block !

So I said bugger it, I'll reformat with 64k , since all the data was backed up on the other server. reformatted , copied data back. Now going good

PS you need the latest firmware / bios ,asm. to recognise the 4tb. Initially I plugged in with old bios and it didn't work

just thought i would update this thread.

can now confirm that:
-originally have x8 4tb drives on a 5805
-connected a 8087 from 5805 01->port 1 of the intel expander
-moved 4 drives from connector 01 to an intel res2sv240 expander port 2
-5805 picks up all 4 drives and works fine yay

in this configuration crystal disk mark 3.01 x64
1000mb read/ write
seq 605 /446mb/s
512k 72/52mb/s
4k 1 /1.3
4kqd32 11 / 1.2
