Default Last Minute flights

Was just watching an old simpsons episode where they get last minute flights epically cheap so long as they dont really care where they end up... I have also heard of flights at the last minute going cheap just to fill the airplane after cancellations etc.. Is any part of this even remotely true?

I want to go on a weeks holiday, dont realy care where (Was thinking asia), as long as it was outside the country (I consider NZ the elusive 7th state) but dont really want to blow the budget on flights alone... whats the cheapest way to do it?

These used to be on offer in Australia as a "Mystery flight". You paid a set price, which used to be around $120 (return), and then showed up at the airport and went on the designated flight. You then spent the day in the other city and flew back in the evening. Note this was back when $120 was very cheap for a return flight!

The cheapest way is to sign up to the various airlines mail services and get their e-mails. Jetstar Jetmail would be an obvious choice. You can also look on various websites like ozbargain.

Jetstar have a sale that ends at midnight tonight. It was only for jetmail subscribers but this link should work.

A few examples (one way prices)
Melb - Bangkok 229
Singapore 229
Beijing 369

If anything its the ones in the distant future that are the cheapest.
e.g. I got Melbourne to Vietnam returning from Thailand for $440 all up, in March next year.

Makes more sense to fill most seats now, and then get epic premium prices from people who have a family emergency or miss another flight and have no choice but to pay tons at the airport.

Adioso.com is a good one for setting up alerts too.
