Not related to my clock build but it is on topic...

When two weeks ago my partner (she with the laser stares) and I went to look at a house for sale in Oatley, we had no idea just how much we would fall in love with the property and the area. Frantically we fought tooth and nail until we secured the contract 4 days after the first viewing and we couldn't be happier.

They say location, location, location. I agree. Given the choice to live in a brand new house on the outskirts of Sydney or close to the city in a nice suburb but in an older house, my decision would be the same every time. After all, you can always knock down the older house and build something you'll be happy with in an area you'll be happy with. It's harder to knock down a suburb on the outskirts and start again...

After the very first inspection we drove down to the town centre to have a look at the shops. We spotted a clock tower standing proudly in the middle of the shopping village. Reading the plaque we burst out in laughter. Neither of us are superstitious but this was surely a sign.

Watch out Oatley, there is a new clockmaker in town.

I didn’t want to start cutting the clock wheels as my very first project on the scroll saw so I decided to use one of Steve Good’s toy patterns and make a fighter plane. Just as well because the scroll saw does take a little getting used to.

I wasn’t too fussed about accuracy with this project. It was more of an experiment and I must admit it was a fun one. I would most definitely want to build some more toys in the future.

1/ All the pieces have been cut, sanded and a couple of coats of stain has been applied.

2/ Had to buy small brushes to get the stain inside the small cut outs.

3/

4/ All glued up and almost ready to fly…

5/ The propeller spins for extra authenticity ;-)

6/ Cleared for take off…

I've been distracted recently but today I made a start on Simplicity by cutting out the third wheel.

I wasn't looking to get too much done and I can't proceed too far without the drill bits which are still in transit. It was more of an experiment to test the plywood for voids. I'm happy with the quality when all is said and done. I did shop around for the cheapest price and I don't feel ripped off in the slightest. You get what you pay for as they say and there's always epoxy as I say. Actually, I don't say that but I'll run with it.

I came across one void and I'm sure there'll be others but overall the ply is of very good quality. I hope the other panels are as good as this 6mm one.

1/ No voids across this whole cut

2/

3/ You can see the small void here. Hope I don't come across these when I cut the teeth.

4/ The third wheel with my first cuts... almost circular.

Some tools arrived yesterday. I did my best to contain my excitement but I failed. I can now make a start on the cogs.

Manufactured in Germany by Colt, they are a mix of HSS-M2 for the brad points and high alloy for the forstners.

hey mate, finished the clock yet? I finally got my shed built this week and starting to sort it out. Strongly considering building a wooden clock as an early project.

Far from finished.

I was house hunting when I started this project and managed to find a place pretty quickly. It is an older house that needed (needs!) a lot of work so that has taken up all my time.

I've got the interior all sorted and am living there now. My workshop is still at the old house and will take a while to be shifted across. It's only 15 minutes away by car though so the plan is when I get free time I'll go over and do some work. Sadly that free time is pretty rare.

Which clock are you planning on building?

Fully understand the "joys" of owning your home.

At this stage, I have no idea of which clock to make (just that it's on the list alongside racing cockpit and arcade machine). Only requirements are that it's easy to make and plans are cheap/free.

Ooh, nice. I've been looking at table top arcade machines as well. I would go with that first if you're looking for something simple. Clocks are very rewarding but not the simplest of woodworking projects.

Ah, German engineering. The boxes for the bits are more precisely and nicely made for anything we mortals could hope to make with the bits themselves .

Would it be considered witchcraft to insert a digital display on the face as well?
Really impressive stuff here, but really, wooden cogs?

Here's one I made two years ago.. It's all mine, design, software, etc.
I somehow think it's not going to quite fit in here:

Thanks, and likewise

If you are doing this because you can, and you appreciate the result,
then I'm watching, and excited to see how this Amish technology develops

Please don't mind my jest, I've never seen this before.
