For me they remind me of the pictures you'd get in fish books when all the photos were taken with film cameras.

How were you lighting it? Quite a few particles still in the water.

Also, the noise looks a bit granulated to me. Almost a bit like gif dithering with quite contrasting colours pixel to pixel. I'm not sure whether thats a combination of noise in the original shot plus the type of sharpening algorithm or something else though?

Not sure if that's a compliment or not!

The lighting comes from the tank lighting, 6x T5HO flourescent lights. There are unfortunately a few particulates in the water, the shots were taken around tank cleaning time.

The noise could well be exacerbated by my editing - I really have no idea what I'm doing in Lightroom. I just adjust the sliders until I think it looks good.

Not sure what lightroom is doing but perhaps its to do with the noise being sharpened?

What ISO did you use for the shots?

And always good to wait for the water to settle

(and to clean the glass as well, but looks clear in your shots)

ISO 400.

They were taken on a Canon 1000D with a nifty fifty. So, not exactly the best equipment money can buy.

You could try a little noise reduction - personally, the noise isn't bothering me.

It might be worth getting more light in the room or borrowing Johnos 5D

Good looking fish. Nice clear pictures too. I find it difficult to get photos of my fish (apart from the fact that most of them have died and there are only a few left

). I think you've done well!
