How about the Tamron SP AF 17-50mm f2.8 XR Di-II LD??
Anyone know if this is any good?

Pretty good for the price. We have one on our work camera (could not talk them out of a compact). A good suggestion for indoor (lower light) shots. If you mainly shoot outdoors, the Canon 15-85mm is a better choice, because of its wider focal range and faster focussing. And consider an external flash to light your indoor photos properly.
