For people it's a bit of a mixed bag depends on subject matter and shooting style. I'll assume you do events and family stuff then get a 17-50 f/2.8.

Cars if you do motorsports you generally want a long(er) lens 200mm+.
Personally I like the set of up a 70-200 f/2.8 and teleconverter for that extra reach.

If you do insects, flowers you want a proper macro lens eg 60mm f/2.8 or 100mm f/2.8

How about the Tamron SP AF 17-50mm f2.8 XR Di-II LD??

Anyone know if this is any good?

Pretty good for the price. We have one on our work camera (could not talk them out of a compact). A good suggestion for indoor (lower light) shots. If you mainly shoot outdoors, the Canon 15-85mm is a better choice, because of its wider focal range and faster focussing. And consider an external flash to light your indoor photos properly.

Second hand Tokina 11-16 ATX-116

I sold mine for $500 late last year and its still the best lens I've owned
