From a self confessed Apple fanboi this product is pretty much exactly where I want tablets to sit. A bit closer to laptop than oversized iPhone.

Perhaps a device which will allow me to carry a tablet and not a laptop to work?

Will look on with interest.

Wait, wait, waitwaitwaitwait...

This is a tablet?

With a keyboard?

That'll run Photoshop (poorly, but run it nonetheless)?

Colour me interested. Also, magalloy is always awesome.

I can already hear the iPad fanbois cognitive dissonance gears shifting...

Hah. Got a mate who's an AV tech at a school who'll agree. Keeps getting requests like "I want to be able to have videos that play on my iPad stream directly to a projector in the next classroom while I'm also viewing a feed from the camera in that classroom and record it to the video server!"

Takes all his willpower not to scream "Lady, do you have ANY FUCKING IDEA how much FUCKING TROUBLE that is?"

Also, while googling this, found this nice little piece by...marketing fuckwit: http://blogs.forrester.com/sarah_rot...wn_worst_enemy

BUT—and you knew there was a “but” coming—Microsoft will be its own worst enemy in this market. More so than Apple or Google, the worst thing that could happen to Microsoft’s Windows RT tablets is Windows 8 on x86. Selling x86-based tablets in the same retail channels as Windows RT tablets will confuse consumers and sow discontent if consumers buy x86 and think they’re getting something like the iPad. Microsoft and its partners need to articulate a compelling strategy for how they will manage consumer expectations in the channel. Consumers aren’t used to thinking about chipsets.
Once again, a marketing drone overestimates their importance.

I'm counting down until Apple 'invents' its own kickstand for iPads, possibly as a thin, 5c piece of metal or plastic that nevertheless attracts a significant surcharge over a 'classic' iPad.

Right place, right time. Old tablets were mildly sucky too. Better marketing too.

Windows XP tablets were aimed towards board meeting people. The problem i found was, like palm pilots before them, the screen inputs were lousy. And software was mostly in house things, so it was by most part, a laptop which wasn't particularly innovative, that cost something like 4 grand. It did mature tech wise, but it was a pretty small market by the time the ipad came out.

Did the apple ipad change everything? No. Apple simply capitalised on the growing smartphone market, and used its superior brand awareness to pimp a relatively cleverly upsized device.

The world shat itself, because stupid people are always more hysterical than reasonable individuals.

You can never use enough to get the message through to an Apple fanboi. There's just not that much sarcasm in the universe.

Apple dont make crappy products. They license belkin and co to make crappy officially licensed products for them.

Anyway; tablet looks pretty sweet. Look forward to spending hours trying it out in the store, before finally deciding i'm not going to give my money to Microsoft.

they mention photoshop/autodesk/solidworks, but did they mention wacom support? ram? cpu speed?

Not sure about RAM but the CPU would be this one at the very least (lowest performing mobile ivy bridge i5). If they use the next one up however you've got something scoring between a Q9400 and Q9450 in a tablet. I don't see any reason you couldn't use a wacom with it, it runs Windows 8, it's got USB and displayport for a cintiq. No idea if you can just use the wacom pen on it though, and I'm sure the surface doesn't have anywhere near the resolution of a wacom tablet when it comes to the touchscreen.
