Fuck 4K digital .

They've been shooting 70mm for decades. Imax and Todd-AO FTW!

i really think they should kill the resolution game though for the time being and work on improving our colour spaces. oleds especially are very bright. we should be increasing the bit depth all the way through the pipeline, to allow a genuine increase in dynamic range. eg 10/12 bit.
this would be nice. movies are already shot in 12 - 16bit, effects shots in 32bit, edits are all 12 - 16bit as well...its only the final encode really that gets dropped down to 8bit

For those knocking Sharp, they are the one's who've never owned or taken the time to look at one closely. For those saying 720p is crap on a 50" plasma, it's either your crap plasma or poor 720p DivX movie you downloaded. I run a 110" 1080p Epson EH-TW5500 projector and 720p MKV's look sweet - no prob. Even SD content looks good. Next to the screen is a Sharp 46" 1080p LCD, and the image and black levels outperform my parent's equivalent Sony Bravia. People always comment how good it looks for an LCD (not even LED). So 90" Sharp LED, would be keen to see, closing the gap between my two screens. While Sharp may not be big in Australia, they are big in larger markets, 80% market share in the US for 60" screens and up, article here :

http://hometheaterreview.com/is-a-na...manufacturers/

Not being popular here just means those in the know can pick them up at fairly great prices. Personally don't think you can find a better LED LCD TV.

just to point out i cant tell the difference between 720P 6000kbps H264 L5.X vs 1080P 13000Kbps H264 L5.X and pretty much all viewing distances on 51inch samsung plasma.

6mpbs vs 13mbps is approx the same amount of data per pixel.

Nothing wrong with Sharp, they just need to ditch the yellow pixel.

This is because the cheap Plasmas on the market today can't display images as sharp as LCD models, they loose detail- resolution is not the only thing to look for in a panel. Put a 1920x1080 image into a 1080p plasma, then do the same on a 1080p LCD, load up a web page/ text and tell me which one looks the best. The LCD will always be brighter, and sharper as less space between pixels.

Granted on a 50" panel once you get back a bit all can look the same, but with a better quality TV you will see the difference, less compression artifacts. Colour resolution of some cheaper panels don't allow you to see the diff, as the image quality effectively gets bottlenecked by the quality of the panel.

my plasma isn't cheap or that new, what if i said i cant tell the diff on my Series 6 40inch samsung LED . what does TV quality have to do with compression artifacts there a biproduct of the encode process and i removed that variable by having equivalent bits per pixel.

no offence i know this stuff pretty well and your making shit up. All things being equal having less colour range wont change your ability to judge the difference between resolutions.

Interesting...

Sounds to me that 4k is already overkill. I don't want to sit that close to a TV.

1.5meters? lol. I think the difference may be subtle but noticeable at regular distance.

How many metres is this regular distance of which you speak?

Normal viewing distance that most will be familiar with, in proportion to the size of the tv of course. As the T Vgets larger you are required to move further away. Certainly not at 1.5m's for a 90" screen, that's obviously just ridiculous.

According to the resolution chart at Carltonbale:

http://s3.carltonbale.com/resolution_chart.html

at 3 metres you will just begin to get some benefit from 4k but not the full benefit until you are at 1.5 metres.

Last time I checked projectors were epic shit. Keep getting told they still are.
