Default how much power would I save between these 2 configs...:

I have a rig that stays on 24/7. It is a niche Intel Xeon set-up circa '06 (google: Sossaman). Now I realise TDP isn't the power a component consumes, but it is a tell-tale sign as such (correct?).

I want to compare the three main components: CPU, mobo & RAM.

my current rigs TDPs for the 3 aforementioned are so:

CPUs (yes there are 2): 31W EACH (total 62W)
chipset (I don't know TDP of entire mobo): 10W
RAM: unknown, however it is DDR2 (which if I recall correctly uses more power than DDR3). There are 6 sticks installed currently.

I was thinking of upgrading to:

CPU (only one): 17W
chipset: 6.7W
RAM: again unknown, but this time 4 sticks of DDR3

anyone have a clue as to how much less power the latter would consume?

Well with simple maths
62 + 10 = 72W
17 + 6.7 = 23.7 W
72 - 23.7 = 48.3W Difference.

Doesnt really work like that though as TDP is the max power it should be using, as in when it is at 100% usage. That said, the new set up would be WAY more power efficient.

I imagine the idle power consumption of the sossaman would be quite low, the sossaman platform seems to be based on the pentium M platform. The Pentium M platform has an idle power consumption of ~9.5w (the only info I could gather on it here) so you could expect idle power consumption to be quite similar ~10-12w

what platform are you upgrading to? I think that you would see minimal improvements at idle but at load there would be substantial improvements.

Instructions-Per-Clock (IPC) is *not* the same as Performance-Per-Clock
Intel 100w TDP =/= AMD 100w TDP

thank you for researching!

sossaman is essentially Core Duo (not Core 2 Duo), both of which came from the same Intel team that made Pentium M! The biggest notable difference between CD & C2D is CD does not do x64.

I was thinking of upgrading to Xeon s1155 - there is a 2C/4T CPU with a TDP of only 17W

I like the sossaman platform because of its low power use, but it is getting restrictive because it cannot run x64 I am wanting to have something that uses as little power or even less, maintaining roughly same processing power (or at least no huge step backwards), & obviously gaining x64 capabilities.

I was thinking:

CPU: http://ark.intel.com/products/65735/...Cache-2_30-GHz)

motherboard: http://usa.asus.com/Motherboards/Int...specifications

RAM (x2): http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...scrollFullInfo

HDDs& fans stay roughly the same, so no point factoring them in, in the power consumption total.

Whereabouts would you be purchasing this nice little cpu?

Definitely nice for 24/7 setup.

haven't decided.. all I do when I look for an obscure CPU is type this into google: "buy Intel yaddayaddayadda" I pick lowest price or if I'm lucky from a retailer that I might have dealt with before
