Silly question, but where does one buy this "phone insurance" from?

if you want my advice, all i can say is that you should buy a screen/digitiser off ebay and try fixing it yourself. nowhere in australia will give you a decent quote that makes it worthwhile fixing (seeing as you can get second-hand fully functional sensation XE/galaxy S2s for as low as $300 nowadays).

its a shame but a consequence of increasingly complex smartphones, unfortunately

(of course, if you were heading to hong kong or southern china or knew someone who was, you could easily get a replacement for <$100AUD. of course thats not a practical reality for most people, including me now that im back in this pathetic backwater. )

not quite but you definitely could get a new sensation XE/XL for around $250-$280AUD there.

I just looked on ebay, you can get a repacment digitizer (touchscreen part plus glass) for about $30.

Its no rocket science to install yourself, maybe find a friend who is good at fixing things, if theyve dont anystuff with console, ipods, phones.

I'v replaced a screens on my ipod and droid2 as well as a speaker / ribbon cable thing. All parts from ebay for $20-30

Maybe buy the replacement screen and take it to an independant phone repair place, maybe one of the ones in a stand in the middle of a mall and see if they will do it for a labor only fee like $50 or something.

Same thing happened to me today. Fck! So what did op end up doing? I heard there are 2 versions fo the screen. One is where the digitiser is separated from the lcd, and one where its glued together. Guess which one i wont attempt diy on... Anyone had any experience on this?
Digitiser on ebay is $25 so cheap enough, but is it worth the risk? My phone still works but its not a pretty sight...lol

Different phone, but I replaced the digitiser on my incredible s a couple of days ago. This one had the digitizer glued to the LCD and the bezel, just adhesive strips though. I managed to do the job in the lounge of the b&b I'm currently doing a stay at over here, with a little travel hairdryer I borrowed from s Scottish lass staying here. It wasn't too hard, although there is a slight smudge left on the LCD, but It's not too distracting (better than the excess tape sticking out the side when I first did a dummy fit though).

If the sensation is assembled the same kinda way go DIY for sure.

I did the same, dropped my phone and went to catch it, instead of catching it I pretty much hammered it onto the handle bars of my daughters bike at high speed.
Cost 200 at the local shop and was ready by the time I finished shopping. Doing it yourself is fairly easy, but I wanted it quickly.

I had the screen on my GS2 to smash to tiny pieces... so bad I was getting shards of glass ni my fingers trying to use it. It worked perfectly after this but was very painful at times and hard to read.

I got a screen + faceplate and digitizer from ebay as the screen is glued to the digitizer and its basically impossible to separate. I got the service manual off google and fixed it myself. Most of the inside of the GS2 was double sided taped together, and was pretty hard to take apart without bending IC boards. I got it all apart though and got the new screen in. Phone worked perfectly.

I chucked it into a draw and went away for 2 weeks and when I got back I would not turn on charger plugged in or not.

After this I would not recommend trying to change screen yourself. I pretty much knew what I was doing and it even worked. Now it doesn't.

my mate smashed his htx one x the other day, decided to DIY repair it as the shops wanted $300 odd to fix the screen...

Was difficult getting the case open. Doesnt look too bad, but the key lights dont light up evenly anymore... ah well, much cheaper than doing it at the shops

Or pick up a Nexus 4, would cost a little more for a full phone.
