Default HEADS UP - Cheap Servers

Looks like there is a Distributor clear out going on - EOFY Maybe?

Hp Proliant DL120 G7

This arvo I was searching interweb as we do
Found MWave had this on special.... Normally around $899 I think from memory... MWave listed it as $481.70

But looks like the normal Discounters are on to it now.... and the price is getting lower.

Currently everyones favourite Megabuy has them for $439.90

http://www.staticice.com.au/cgi-bin/...l120+g7&spos=1

And from what I have sussed out on the interweb, with latest bios they might just work with 32gb Ram...

Upgradable to Intel Xeon E3-1280

Info here
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport...odTypeId=15351

Quickspecs Here
http://h18004.www1.hp.com/products/q...14009_div.HTML

This is the base base model...
i3-2100
2Gb Ram (4 Ram slots) Base model SHOULD have 2 x 1Gb dimms
No Optical Drive
Single PSU
1 x 250GB SATA Drive
BR110i controller (it's really calling for a P212 or a P410 controller)
Not sure if it includes the iLO3 or not as standard (IPMI) but it's an option if not.

But it has 4 x 3.5inch drive bays
1 x PCIE2 x16 Slot
1 x PCIE2 x 4 Slot (x8 mechanical)

But should leave room for some upgrading if you like

Be useful for VIRTUALIZATION users possibly, low power and low noise in a 1RU Rack Mount format.

Flog off the Memory and the i3 CPU
Plonk in an E3-1230 and 16Gig...

Low power and some Ooomph behind it.

Do the sums.... on a C203 Board 4 x Howswap bays, 2Gb Ram and try and find a 1RU case to fit it in...

This is a bargain I think

Looks like there might only be around 50 of them...

There is also the next step up version for more Dollars (Around $661)
Extras are
E3-1240 Xeon not an i3-2100
4gig ram not 2gig
P212 SAS controller

======

And another one (Different Model)
DL160 G6 (Takes Dual Six Core Xeon 5600's)
18 Ram slots for MAX 288Gig capacity !!

Looks like they have dropped from $3400 down to around $881

So some good Bargains around

Darnit.. I think that'll be an inch or so too deep for my rack. That's a pretty darn good deal.

Just a quick head up for ESXi users.

The DL120G7 is not on the VMware HCL. It will however work just fine if you disable the dynamic power settings in the BIOS as per http://communities.vmware.com/message/1887051

Also the BR110i is not VMware compatible either. A p212 card is though, and with a 256mb cache module it will do RAID5.

As for the DL160 G6's, that's an insane price!!! If I had the cash......

I've been getting annoyed at a video card fan whose bearings are going noisy... might be easier just to buy a new server! Cheers for the tip!

Throw a few external facing HBAs in and all good.

Extra RAM is a must but still, for those coins, make a great option against the farken HP micro servers. Make good torrent box too.....LOL
