Default Must remove battery / clear CMOS to boot, P8Z77-M PRO

Solved: Replaced the motherboard with a Gigabyte equivalent.

Hey guys,

Built a PC for my friend a few days ago, and the specs are as follows:

i5 3550
8gb Corsair DDR3
P8Z77M- PRO
Seasonic 620w
Gigabyte 7850
and the obligatory SSD + HDD.

Now, i'm running basically the same setup (except with a x760w, i5 3570k and a 670), and have had 0 issues.

Now, for some reason, the PC will not boot unless the CMOS is cleared. I have tried removing cards / ports / etc, so that it's just a bare Mobo + CPU + single stick of ram, but it still wouldn't boot, unless I cleared the CMOS.

This is getting a little bit infuriating, but I'm thinking I'll need to flash the bios. The computer will boot and operate fine, though I havn't run any benchmarks, though I didn't notice any odd behaviour.

I'm thinking I'll need to flash the bios, but I'm just wondering what the best course of action would be.

Any help will be met with undying and everlasting love.

Thanks!

If you've exhausted all avenues, then a bios flash MAY help. I noticed the latest flash for your board, rev 1303, says "Improve System Stability", as did the previous one. So it's probably worth a shot.

If you decide to flash, Unzip it to a usb thumb drive, then in the bios there should be a "Tools" button , navigate to the usb drive, locate the bios flash, and flash it from there.

Goodluck!

I'll need to try that. Net was down all last night so I didn't get a chance.

Interestingly, I had the computer working fine all last night, after removing the battery and replacing it. Was shutting down / booting up fine, and benched 3dmark vantage no problem (got 21k). However, come this morning and the thing won't boot. This is weird. I'll give it a shot after work

I'm interested to see if a bios flash helps with your issue, reason being, my recent build, using an Asus P8Z77-V LK mobo, would boot fine, but in Win 7 would randomly Hard-Lock.

Checked EVERYTHING... no dice.

So as a last ditch effort to get it stable, before I killed myself, I flashed it, and viola! all good. Has been rock stable
since.

Again Good Luck!

And ya update bios see how that goes.

Yeah, going to update my bios on my PC first (in case I fuck it up royally) and then put it on the other PC, see how it goes. I havn't checked if the ram is set to XMS in the bios, it's all set to auto, other than iGPU which is disabled (the onboard gpu)

It seemingly occurs if the PC is left off for a long period of time. I don't know what causes it exactly. It was working perfectly last night, I could turn it off at the wall, or force it to shut down via the button, or I could shut it down in windows and it'd boot up perfectly fine again. Come this morning, same issue. Can't boot :\

Gonna do the update soon, see how we go. Anything worth knowing?

Okay, flashed the bios. All seems well. Going to let it sit overnight and see if the issue arises again, wasn't occurring before.

Thanks for everyones' help!

Okay, went to boot the PC up just before and it's a no go. The PC won't boot unless I remove the CMOS battery. This is wierd, because it operates 100% correctly otherwise. What are everyones' thoughts on this?

Edit: I realised I had the CPU and Chassis fan plugs swapped (CPU was in the CHA header, and vice versa), not sure if this would prevent it from booting. That being said, in my other setup i don't even have a fan plugged into the CPU header... =\

Edit: Issue is still persisting. Will need to DOA the board I think =[

Could be a faulty CMOS battery. Have seen that before.

Hi xok,

This is really strange!! I actually found this thread when using Google to try and see if anyone else was having this issue.
We have the EXACT same motherboard at work here in New Zealand, actually over 20 of them and 4 of them have displayed this exact problem to the letter.

Our config's we've tried...

P8Z77M-PRO
Intel i7 3770
4GB (2x 2gb Kingston)
ACBel 450w PSU

P8Z77M-PRO
Intel Pentium Dual Core G620 (just for test)
8GB Kingston HyperX
InWin 400w PSU

Still same problem, always have to remove CMOS battery after a power down. Have also tried flashing bios and all that kind of thing. I'm wondering if it's a bad batch of boards?
Can you possibly post or PM me the serial number of your board? I want to see if it's similar to ours, as ours were sourced from Aussie too I believe.

Cheers mate

I've replaced it twice, with the same result

Hey mate, this seems really odd, as i've got one working perfectly in one system and the other is just giving me grief to no end. I'm returning it to Umart tomorrow morning, hopefully this will have a positive resolution

I'm at a loss, hopefully exchanging the board and pointing Umart to Asus (who now don't take any mobo enquiries directly from the User). My rig (specs are in the signature) has been rock solid, and I've encountered no issues whatsoever.

No worries. I'll have to look it up on the box after I receive it back from my friend. Will have an answer for you tonight. I'll also grab the SN from my verified working board too, for comparison, after work tonight.

Any time, I hope we can at least narrow down the issue.

Not much to report, other than the serial numbers:

Hope that can help someone out. Interestingly, if you google this issue, this thread is the first result
