Default Taking photos from a plane going to Adelaide

Hey peeps, I'm flying back to Adelaide in the evening and was wondering which side of the plane is best for photographing night lights on approach from a window seat?

Its just a domestic flight from Sydney, if that makes any difference.

Thanks

depends a lot on the weather as to which way they approach but generally the seats on the LHS looking forward. Planes often pass over/near to Adelaide oval so you have the city on your Left.

That said they have usually told you by then to fasten seat belts and turn off all electronic devices so they might get a bit narky if you start pulling out a camera

Thanks for that, with that advice I just booked a left side seat. Its just over the wing, but its the best I could get. Oh yeah that whole turn off electronics thing... man that's annoying! Here's hoping I get a couple nice shots

Easy, just whip out your Nikon F or similar and explain that it's fully mechanical.

And then try to explain why that strange remote thing in your hand is only a light meter, and not something more sinister.

Very true, Sunny 16 is quite beyond it's usefulness while taking photos of city lights from a plane. Okay, okay.. Selenium meter? Does that count?

done this a few times - biggest issue will be light reflection from the window - internal lights of the plane will reflect from both the outer and inner windows (there's two). Even if the cabin is dimmed, there's enough stray light from EXIT signs and aisle lighting to screw you. Then there's the grubby, foggy and hazy windows..

A few years ago on my way back from LAX i took a roll of film using an intervalometer out of the aircraft. Was quite cool to see sunrise and sunset etc. Unfortunately it was all a bit blurry because of the windows sucking.

In the past I've also done a pinhole shot from a SIN>LHR flight, that turned out quite cool but the print was destroyed in the Canberra bush fires.

Good luck though.

I remember the last time i was on a flight on Qantas, there was a loophole saying that you could still use devices that have built in batteries.

I always wondered what that meant.

the biggest problem is reflection in the glass and dirty windows (not on the outside, but the inside panel)
I tried it on the approach to Sydney from Hobart and Qantas has some grubby planes (inside and outside).

And i guess the plane will also be wobbly due to turbulence.

that makes sense. It'd be mighty inconvenient for all parties to get them to switch off pacemakers. : \
