Default Sluggish on boot when HDMI plugged in

This only recently started happening.

When I boot my laptop with anything plugged into the hdmi port, as soon as windows hits the login screen, it turns completely sluggish. The mouse and keyboard has a 3-10 second delay, everything just turns slow even the cursor blink rate is in slow motion.
The only fix it to boot the laptop with nothing plugged into the hdmi port, then once I log in, plug in my monitor and it's perfectly fine.

I only just formatted about 3 weeks ago, I haven't installed anything new before this appeared, it doesn't matter if I run it off the battery or the wall it still happens.

It's an Acer Aspire 5742g.

I'll ask the obvious first to get it out of the way:
  • Have you updated the graphics drivers? Tried BIOS update?
  • Have you tried a different HDMI cable and monitor?
  • The problem persists even if you leave it to load for a while? Or does it go away after a while? (I'm not to sure from your description)
  • What does task manager have to say when its sluggish? CPU at 100% I imagine? RAM full?
  • What are temps like?

My best guess at the moment is BIOS is being left to pass the information along, and doing it incorrectly. The CPU then somehow ends up trying to do all the work as it wasn't handed off to the GPU?

Doesn't surprise me at all. Windows has trouble recognising monitors connected via HDMI in my experience. My computer won't show a picture when waking up from sleep if I connect my monitor using a HDMI cable. Maybe try using the VGA or DVI port on the laptop to connect an external monitor until Microsoft gets Windows to work properly with HDMI.

Have you installed the drivers to use the HDMI output?

Ended up trying a whole bunch of different Intel graphics drivers yesterday, finally got one to work on boot. Beats me why this issue popped up all of a sudden. Oh well fixed now.
