I would recommend either SWTOR, Eve online or Guild Wars 2 (releases August 28).

SWTOR for the story
Eve for PVP
GW2 for exploration/story.

You dont join a MMORPG to play by yourself. Just as you dont play pen and paper RPGs on your own.

If you want to do something by yourself. Go read a novel.

Gah. Lord of the Rings Online. Free to play, very active and mature community. Very polished game with many years of tweaking and fine tuning. Still releasing expansions and new content updates.

Yeah MMO's are not made for SP experiences. They are deisgned around the fact there are a lot of people playing so team work is a must. GW2 has public events where you don't have to be in a party or guild to complete them, so that may be up your alley. They also have very polished WvWvW (3 servers in constant PvP battle.) Any raiding or "end game" stuff requires a group / guild though.

You can explore a lot of GW2 beta on your own but its far more enjoyable with a group. The dynamic events are not made to be solo'd especially that cave troll in the Destiny's Reach settlement/farmstead area

In perfect world that would be something not monotonous, not demand joining guilds or teams in order to maximize experience (not looking for online socializing) and with good graphics.
I'd recommend SWTOR as a good single player experience of MMOs. More fun with people usually, but fine single player.

If you have ever read Tolkien then Lord of the Rings Online is an excellent MMO and has best community of any i've played in the last 10 years. The first big chunk of the game is free-to-play also.

Gobble gobble.

while I do suggest you look at the free 2 play MMOs first.

World of Warcraft is rather cheap this week.
(something like 10 bucks for the original/1st expansion, then 10 each for next two expansions).

Thanks for recommendations. Will take a closer look at GW2, LotR and SWTOR.

After obtaining a 24hour code for The Secret World, I've since bought a copy and subbed. Though not without its detractors, it is definitely worth a look. Having a blast in the early zones.

I'd say give EQ 2 a shot, in free to play mode and see how you go.
Can solo or group up and could level all the way as well if so desired.
The free to play concept with restrictions is not something that suits me personally, but you could try it out for the cost of a download and go all the way to max level in it.

One of the groups i belong to are having a blast with The Secret World. Having said that, considering it is a game that charges you for the game and then adds a sub fee on top, the best value around for a AAA title will be Guild Wars 2.

Pre puchase directly from anet (while pre-purchase is still avail) and with no subs, makes it the best deal on offer atm.

https://buy.guildwars2.com/en/

Whether you are a PvE gear whore like me, or a PvP goon, there will be something there for you. Best bit is, if you want to put it down for a few months, its still there for you whenever.

In the meantime, plenty of free MMo's to choose from or extended free periods to demo. EvE, i found tedious, Fallen Earth on steam is fun(ish) a poor mans Fallout MMO if you will, and LotR online is polished but standard fare that will constantly nag you with restricted content until you cough up some cash. Forget star wars, ultimately an overpriced single player experience that you will sub for 1 months on top of the initial purchase. Better deals to be had for a time waste single gaming experience coming up in the steam summer sale.

Another vote to wait for Guild Wars 2.

Yep, agree with this. And for gods sake if you want a good pvp game this is by far the last one you should be choosing. The pve should be ok but its basically the ultimate dumbed down mmo, so for a very simple first mmo it might be the most accessible for you.
