Default network sharing

I'm once again having problems with networking these damn operating systems!

2 PCs (One PC one laptop)

From laptop End (Vista Home premium 64bit)
I get the error windows cannot access etc Drive is available but the user account you logged on with was denied access.

From the Windows 7 end (PC) it asks to enter network password.......

Really irritating!

Can anybody help?

Cheers

  1. Set both machines to a Home or Work network.
  2. Network discovery ON, file and printer sharing ON.
  3. Either create identical user accounts on both PCs with same passwords; OR disable password-protected sharing.
  4. Make sure sharing is enabled in the Network and Sharing Center
  5. Make sure the folders you are sharing are shared with the appropriate users for option 1 above, or shared with everyone for option 2 (no passwords)
  6. Finally, ensure the folder you are sharing doesn't have special file/folder permissions (ie, User directory, Program Files, Windows, etc)
  7. (if above is true, you can override by modifying the security settings on the that file/folder, but make sure you know what you're doing)

If the above doesn't work, you've broken something/fiddled too much/have a third-party firewall installed. Try switching to a Work network if you're using a Home network, as this will "reset" some of the sharing/firewall settings for Windows.

EDIT: as an update, both errors you're getting are caused by using password-protected sharing but NOT using the correct usernames/passwords.
