Default 2600k to 3770k - Thoughts?

Hey guys,

My parents will be giving me $X to build them a new PC.

I was going to get them the i5 3570K.

I was thinking... if I gave them my i7 2600k and forked out the extra $120 and upgraded myself to the i7 3770k we might both see an upgrade.

Is this true? I keep hearing rumors the ivy bridges are terrible clockers...

I don't go for high clocks, mostly around 4.4ghz on H70. Will I actually see any noticeable differences for my $120 ?

Definitely not worth it over a better pc case//ssd for your parents. Your rig looks beast enough as it is rofl.

Sorry, Didn't mention I already planned a vertex 4 or agility 4 for my parents machine and I'm already running Raid0 SSD's.

So I'm better off just leaving my machine as is and buying my parents the I5-3570K ??

Well I guess it depends on whether or not you need more performance, I doubt there would be anything hugely noticeable over your current setup though.

You could always compare your 3dmark11 score to similar setups in the 3dmark11 thread to see if there are any gains to be had.

To me it would be more of a sidegrade if anything, better to wait for when you upgrade your GPU's and do it all at once.

Parents? the 3570k is way overkill. the 3450 will be more than enough, hell, a i3 2120 will be good enough unless they're gaming or doing heaps of encoding

Agreed. I personally would go for a i3 if it was my parents. They only use the internet.

Then save the $$ and get them an Intel SSD instead of cheap OCZ crap.

I went from a 2600k to a 3770k and reckon i lost about 200mhz.. went from 4.6 to 4.4ghz..

That said, I bought a new z77 board at the same time so that I could use 2x7970 vid cards on pcie 3 x8 rather than pcie 2 x8..

There's really no reason to from sandy to ivy bridge, unless you need some of the other features that come with the latter chipset.. Save your money otherwise..

PCs are so cheap. I want to get them something future proof that they won't complain about.

Since I don't need to get them a gpu, I want to focus on the cpu/ram/hdd

Nothing wrong with ocz drives

I've just upgraded from 2500K to a 3770K mainly to utilize the PCI Express 3.0 feature on my Z68 mobo. The Sandy Bridge chip ran a cool 4.5GHz 24/7 with a little less than 1.3vcore. This i7 3770K at stock so far hasn't shown or presented any benefit benchmark wise.

It get hot too, really quickly, with minor voltage increases.

I'm still in the tweaking phase but so far I'm not impressed.

EDIT: Before I shipped my 2500K off today I had to update the BIOS from P1.20 to P2.30 and I forgot to take note of my settings. Now the BIOS looks different with different terminology so I'm gonna have to relearn everything and start from scratch!

Haha that's funny. He does have a point but if you apply this to all the parts then you are quickly talking a couple of hundred more

I have a Pentium in my media PC with a 60GB SSD and it feels just as fast as my i7 for standard stuff.

So I'd rather put the money towards an SSD, IPS screen, better keyboard, mouse things like that.
