Got these suckers in the event log now, but I think it's unrelated to the issue and just steam whinging because I ran it off a different drive:
Quote:
The Steam Client Service service failed to start due to the following error:
The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion.

I've tried different games, same issue. Different drivers, same issue.

Gotta be the hardware then, I just want to find out if it's my ssd or the pc that's the issue here.

I'm thinking that because I haven't had any event logs for failed stuff to do with the hdd (the usual CRC errors you get when drives shit out) it's probably not that.

Twas a clean install yeah

Game is soaking 100% of the cpu, borderlands is not responding, system interrupts is using 0.44% of the cpu which seems higher than normal.

Damn game exited before I could get GPU usage

Pulled the old ssd to see if I was running my PSU to the max, I wasn't. I know it can power more anyway.

I'll try one more time to crash it then bed

If it was a PSU issue, wouldn't the system power down?

Oh also what's a good GPU test? Last time I was doing this furmark was the goto but I remember something cropping up about it being bad

anything that loads up the gpu is good for a load test
3dmark will do the trick

nuh psus do all sorts of weird shit..thats why u just gota rule it out asap
more likely to be gpu or driver
but doesnt look to be driver or OS...

rule out psu and that leaves gpu....and mobo

did u do any other cable tidying or changes when u installed the ssd?

Nope just installed the SSD.

Got it to hang again, different issue though, cpu didn't stay maxed this time, and it was triggered by opening the steam overlay.

I'll have to try a different psu tomorrow. Then I'll try a different GPU, as the only other GPU I have is a passive one with much lower power requirements.

Just did the following:
Tested known good PSU (HX 620) - Crash
Tested known good GPU (HD 5450 with HX 620) - Crash

Down to the cable for the SSD now

You said you have tried different games but were they all steam games? Maybe it is a steam problem....

Valid point, I'll see if I have something to trial.

Thinking I'll have to test the ram too

*edit* Turning out to be more difficult than I thought, haven't used an optical drive for ages becuase I've gone digital downloads only
