Default Crossfire 7970 Freezes during games

Hey there forum.

I'm experiencing a bit of trouble with my 2 crossfired 7970's (1xHIS7970 & 1xASUS DIRECTCUII 7970).

Here are all my current components.

3x2 GB G.Skill 1600 MHz RAM
AX1200 Watt Corsair GOLD PSU
X58UD3R Rev 2.0 Gigabyte motherboard
i7-930 - 2.8 GHz - (Reset to stock speed)
and (1xHIS7970 & 1xASUS DIRECTCUII 7970).

Okay, so the freezing generally occurs only when I'm playing games, sometimes about 30 or 45 minutes into the game. Everything simply stops working, theres no BSOD just the last frozen frame stuck on my screen. I cannot Ctrl+alt+delete out of the game. Only way I can get rid of the issue is to completely restart the PC using the case switch.

I've wiped all CCC drivers and AMD drivers off my PC using driver sweeper and reinstalled an earlier version of the GPU drivers (12.6 Catalyst) I was using 12.7 beta, and I thought that could've been the main reason my PC was freezing but the problem still persisted even after I installed 12.6.

I decided to disable crossfirex in CCC before playing games and yet the game still freezes in the same way even when crossfireX is enabled.

I've swapped the videocards position on the motherboard from this

x16 - Direct CUII 7970
x8 - HIS 7970

to this

x16 - HIS 7970
x8 - Direct CUII 7970

and yet the freezing still occurred when I tried playing games.

I've run a RAM diagnostic to test whether my RAM has any faults, and that test showed no issues what-so-ever with the RAM.

The PSU and Direct CUII 7970 are only 2 weeks old and brand new.

I've checked all plugs within the case, and replugged everything just to make sure its all working.

Also, freezing can occur in games even when crossfirex is disabled in CCC.

I get no problems when running a single 7970 at a 5760x1080 resolution with all games.

What could be the problem here? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you

what game(s)?
Have you tried lowering the clocks on the cards?

Anno 2070
Assassins Creed Revelations
Company of Heroes
Max Payne 3

Only ones that seems to work perfectly fine is Red Orchestra 2
and Anno 2070 when running a single monitor resolution

Both cards are set to stock speed.

do you use multiple monitors? try gaming on just 1 for a session and unplug the others from the video cards.

Seems to be working fine on single monitor resolution when crossfire is deactivated, yet it still pauses when crossfire is activated

Edit - Also Sniper V2 Elite seems to be randomly freezing even on normal resolution.

Welcome to the ATI sux club
I've got the same problems.
My trifire 6970 worked with 12.6 last week, now they don't.
Try going back to 12.4, that's what I'm doing right now.
Drive cleaner makes things worse for me.
Using drive cleaner and then installing CCC results in my cards not being detected !!!!

Mhm, I get those types of problems as well sometimes, have to resort to using Driver Sweeper in safe mode just to delete all the video card drivers off my PC.

I'm not even sure whether the current problem I'm getting is a hardware or software related issue. I've downgraded from 12.7beta to 12.6 to 12.4 (As you mentioned) and yet it's still locking up.

Funny thing is though, that some games work perfectly fine for long periods of time in 1920x1080 resolution, yet everything freezes up during games when I switch to 5760x1080 resolution. It's pretty frustrating.

Fixed mine again.
Disabled usb3 in bios

Using only my pciX revo drive.
All is good at the moment.
Running at 4.2 GHz

Had 12.6 installed, used drive sweeper and installed 12.4
